Index, the bankrupt parent company of Persona and Shin Megami Tensei developer Atlus, plans to start an auction for a buyer as early as next week, according to Bloomberg sources.
:(
I can't quite understand if Index is seeking someone to buy them as a whole or just auctioning off Atlus, but either way it means Atlus' fate is up in the air. Here's hoping for the best, but expecting a bad outcome.
Garry should buy them.
Garry should buy them.
Sadly a pipe dream.
I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo buys them, since a lot of debt was owed to them, yet they should interest in Altus themselves.
I hope EA buys them.

Wouldn't it make sense if Sony buys them? I mean most of the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei games were on the Playstation consoles.

Persona, yes, but SMT proper's actually seen more Nintendo support. Plus there's the whole Trauma Center series and we have SMTxFE coming up. Persona's their most visible series, but it's actually pretty much the exception as far as console tendency is concerned.
So yeah, I'm hoping for (and expecting) Nintendo to buy them. Atlus would fit right in next to Monolith. Plus, they would sorta have to buy them if we wanna see SMTxFE to completion. Sony would stop that dead, and it was a big reveal during that one Nintendo Direct.
I hope EA buys them.
Pre-order now and get the Fool Arcana Persona pack.
I just hope Capcom doesn't get their hands on this.

I actually HOPE Nintendo doesn't buy them, but rather a different publisher. Atlus has published games for pretty much every console under the sun, and I have said it before that restricting it to two consoles for a niche market is a fucking terrible way to run a business.
Omg Nintendo plz buy them. We need more cool 2nd party developers like the good old SNES/N64 days
If they're deep in the shitter it's unlikely Nintendo will buy them. The same thing happened with Silicon Knights. They were starting work on Eternal Darkness 2 up until SK lost vs Epic in their lawsuit. But it might be in their best interest to buy them if the numbers are okay and if it means getting some strong support.
Here's a list of who they owe money to and how much they owe. The numbers are indicated in thousands of yen. Someone else do the math.

EDIT: This list isn't complete though. The total debt is much larger and ATLUS is actually the one of the healthier parts Index owns.

Well... First off, you have to realize just how much cash Nintendo has in the bank, and second, Nintendo's actually one of the companies on that list that Atlus owes big to. Fifth place, in fact, at 13.6 million yen.

I'm well aware that a third-party buying them up would be ideal. However, this is a major opportunity for both Nintendo and Sony to snag major exclusives for the long run, and if one of them has to be the company to buy up Atlus, I'm hoping it's Nintendo. They simply have more to lose if Atlus is taken from them than Sony does. Sony's had the Persona series, Catherine (which it shared with Microsoft), and a few other things. Nintendo's had nearly everything else, including most of the proper SMT games.
The thing is, a situation like this is one of the most volatile scenarios a console war can see, where a third-party is at risk of being snatched up by one console manufacturer. Especially if it's one with as die-hard fans as Atlus. It's one part prisoner's dilemma and one part Schrödinger's cat. If Atlus stays third-party, it's a minor victory for everyone and the status quo stays unchanged. But both Nintendo and Sony have something to gain here by purchasing the company outright, and that also means each has something to lose in the risk of the competition outbidding them or any third-party. Like it or not, there's a very real possibility here that Atlus is about to be locked to one company, and that will set gaming communities ablaze because one group of console fans is about to lose the ability to play those games entirely, like a karmic side-mission in inFAMOUS. And that will trigger the most dangerous of all emotions in a fanboy: desperation.
Let's just put it this way: I know a lot of people wouldn't want to buy a Wii U for just Persona 5. Well, conversely... on a personal note, I don't wanna buy a PS4 for just Trauma Center 6. Y'see the problem here? Someone's gotta give to keep playing the series they like.

To be fair, Silcon Knights had a crap load of management issues.

What if UbiSoft buys them? or maybe SEGA?
Please not Nintendo, I don't want to buy a WiiU for Persona 5.

Nintendo is owed around 5 times more than Sega is.

Still better than it being dissolved and/or IPs being sat on by the potential buyer. At least we know Nintendo would use the franchises, especially with that crossover coming up.

You won't have to because it'll come out for PS3 2 years after everyone bought a PS4
Looks like Nintendo is showing interest in buying them right now.

fuck sake
really don't want to buy a wiiu just for this
EA is an automatic no and will destory it with each and every moment of it and release shitty dlcs at high prices that nobody want's to buy.
Activision will do the same shit as EA does
Capcom is in the shitter after DMC reboot and Resident Evil 6.
THQ no longer exist.
Atari no longer exist.
Square Enix is a bit of a mixed, some people say they are doing poorly since Final Fantasy XIII, and the terrible Final Fantasy XIV 1.0, however after the announcment of Final Fantasy XV and Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn coming out, it may get back on track, however I don't know if they are willing to purchase Atlus, if they did, it may have a chance to be saved.
Nintendo is not doing greatly at all, and probably end up making the game more lackluster or family friendly, which the games itself is mostly... teen to mature rated...
I wouldn't mind if Square Enix took it over, seems to be the best bet to make everyone somewhat happy.

dmc reboot was fucking awesome, and I'd argue that the resident evil series was in the shitter since resi 5

Nintendo still has plenty in the bank, and what they need right now more than anything is exclusives. They're not going to get the big multiplats, so they need to make their own games, and Atlus would help with that. Nintendo can afford them, and it would be in their best interest to.
Nintendo really can't censor everything like they want to anymore. Fucking Bayoneta 2 proves that, they're funding a game designed around over-the-top fanservice. Persona is mild compared to that.

article isn't written very well and is mostly just speculation. don't take it too seriously.
Sony or Nintendo getting them would be good.
Personally hoping Sony acquires them, if anyone does, but Nintendo is a close second. I don't feel too confident about any other third party publisher.
I can see Nintendo buying Atlus very well, considering the most recent SMT releases (Strange Journey, Devil Survivor 1/2, the Soul Hackers Remake and SMT4) were on nothing else but Nintendo platforms.
Sony platforms got Persona over that time, but looking at how Shin Megami Tensei 4 sold more copies in one week than Persona 4 Golden did in its first month, it's more likely to me that Nintendo buys them rather than Sony.
I mean, Nintendo even got a whole crossover game with them coming up.
