UN To Name Fictional Character "Wonder Woman" Honary Ambassador
In the DC Universe, “Wonder Woman” has long acted as an ambassador from her native land, but soon the Themiscyran Princess will take on the role for real when she becomes UN Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls.
According to a statement released by the UN, the official announcement of “Wonder Woman’s” new title will be made at an event held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Friday October 21.
The ceremony will be attended by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson and some “surprise guests” – hopefully including Gal Gadot and Lynda Carter and every other actor who has appeared in the role over the years.
The event is planned to launch a landmark global campaign supporting UN Sustainable Development Goal #5, namely to “achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls,” on the occasion of “Wonder Woman’s” 75th Anniversary.
They can't do anything on stopping war atrocities and crimes against humanities for decades, but hey they can agree on giving a private company a nice commercial.
How is she going to find time to be an ambassador and save the world at the same time?
Just think of the number of meetings she will have to cut short to fight some evil space monster!
Nothing will ever get done!!
What a fucking joke.
The great statesmen of history are rolling in their graves.

This just seems to send a wrong message. At least they could have used someone who wasn't fictional

Pretty much, it's not as if there weren't any real role model they could have used.
Could they not have used someone like Mary Robinson? She was a great President of Ireland and has worked very hard for women and minorities around the world. And no, I'm not just saying that because she's Irish - I'm also saying that because she worked very extensively with the UN.
I fear the UN is heading towards what happened to the League of Nations...
We're relevant, you guys... don’t ditch us just yet.
League of nations in 3... 2...
Seriously someone what does this do positively for the world?
Uhh, is there anything more than cbr.com or news that point there as source? This sounds weird and couldn't find anything to back this up from UN or DC themselves. For one, I'd expect the "statement released by the UN" to be traceable, and as it stands I can't find such thing. I'm questioning this article.
Gee, the UN can even find ways to not do things when they are already not doing anything at all.
A new level!

You do realize there's the capacity for more than one ambassador right? Considering this is honorary and everything too, quit complaining. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_of_honor

It's still pretty weird to name a private IP and fictional character Honorary Ambassador. I don't really see what it achieves besides publicity for DC?
In her 75 years she did more than enough to not deserve that award.
Oh here come the childish UN doesn't do anything posts.

Where in my post did I say it wasn't?
And I want Batman for the Empowerment of Men and and Boys, when is that going to happen?
Typical lopsided gender equality bullshit. How about we stop treating and celebrating the sexes differently and come together? Sexism will end when people stop talking about it.

ignoring a problem is a good way not to solve it

There's a difference between ignoring something and not creating divides.

It's almost like making a statement honoring a fictional character is much, much simpler than arresting heads of state for genocide within the borders of their own country without the ability to use any form of force.
The UN is a massive organization. Looking at it like one thing is like seeing how Flint Michigan's water crisis is being mismanaged and then screaming about how the government of Mobile Alabama is shit because of it.
Oh here come the childish UN doesn't do anything posts.
because it's easy to not think and shit on the UN, rather than you know, reading up on organisations like the WHO and then realising hey wait a minute, maybe the UN does do things

The Food and Agriculture Organization, part of the UN, has 197 member countries and has cooperated with the European Union and other unions/states to dish out millions and millions in food aid across the globe, and has organized thousands of NGOs to foster the development of agriculture in LDCs and LLDCs. It has concrete effects on food availability in LDCs, feeding millions of people every year. It researches food prices and assembles the Food Price Index as a measure of global food cost.
Or, for one you might have heard about, the fucking WHO. The IMF. The World Bank. The Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty Organization. UNESCO.
People who think the UN does nothing are unbelievably ignorant. What do you want? You want the UN to go march in with the International Army and break international sovereignty to go arrest war criminals? Do you want them to nationalize? They use nothing but diplomacy and it's unbelievably effective considering that they have quite literally no ability to threaten the use of military force like sovereign nations can.

i've said this in almost every UN thread, but the people making the dumb "the UN does nothing lmao" posts are (i reckon) exactly the same people who would be crying their eyes out in the event that the UN did the thing they were talking about
It exists?
It cant do anything because no state will give it the power to do so. Making it not exist will solve that how?
Wonder women does not exist unless you mean the concept of the comic book character but i dont see how nations... Oh you think i meant the UN as a whole... I meant the fictional character ambassador bs...

I was talking about wonder women being an ambassador... What does that do positively? Shes not real.

The un is a force for good, even if somewhat inefficient at times and obviously flawed in ways. They just should not spend time and resources on bs like this because their detractors use this to stop taking them serious... Just this thread is proof of that. One of my current partners works at the UN so im pretty well informed about some good work they do, but also the constant risk of falling in the same trap the league of nations did by trying to force relevance through uninforceable or just 'feel good' acts that do nothing but hit headlines and hearts... Like the league of nations did in its swan song.
Gary Johnson: 'Wonder Woman is a world leader I admire'
We need an "I don't understand anything about international politics" starter pack and the first item is saying the UN is useless and never dfoes anything.
I'm guessing they didn't know about the alternate universe where Wonder Woman becomes manipulative enough to stroke Superman's dick and convinces him to overthrow literally every world government. :v:
Wonder Woman is in-universe an ambassador in some continuities. She's sent to the world of men(the US) as an ambassador and her armor has the pattern of the US flag as a sign of respect

History is going to look back on this stuff and C:/windows/User/Sarkeesian/Misogyny.txt with a slight sense of irony.
