If you're living in the Midwestern United States, then you've probably heard these proud and noble beasts. They just entered my area yesterday and they are everywhere. They only come out of hibernation once every few years (usually about 7-17 years), and when they do, they conquer the territory with their non-stop screeching sound as they look for mates. I remember as child in the late 1990s, I used to pick up hundreds of these things and put them in buckets, and they couldn't get out. Luckily, their sound is so constant and non-stop that it becomes practically ambient, and you can just ignore it.

Some cultures even eat these bugs, such as the Chinese (picture above is Cryptotympana atrata, or deep-fried cicada). So has anyone else seen or heard them yet? I just came back to the United States after a brief trip to the nation of Jonathanland, and I don't recall there being any there, or at least if there was, I effectively ignored them. Heck some people even use them to fish with, I'm not sure how successful it is though.
For those of you who aren't in an area where they have come out of hibernation, here's what they sound like:

These bugs own, what are talking about

I just dislike insects, sorry.
I moved from the midwest around 7 almost 8 years ago. Never had to deal with those things ever again.
You got trolled.
I like it how a flock of these things just die mid flight and end up hitting my car making nice thunk noises from their carcass slamming into my wind shield.
I'm glad we got our invasion like 3 years ago. 4-14years of freedom left here.
Once every few years? We listen to these every summer in Greece. At least in the islands, in city areas it's a rare occasion for it to be that intense.

Was the same for me when I lived in Chicago, Illinois. Granted they weren't gigantic flocks like the other posters in this thread claim (it was more like a handful) but they were still fucking there.

I know right, it's like they come out of nowhere one day, and then all die spontaneously one day.
Oh man I love these things
It really makes me think, what if insects and animals used online forums and Facebook?
Like I could imagine one of these bug's feed:
"Finally unburrowed from the ground"
"Looking for a mate"
"is in a relationship with *insert name*"
"oh hell yeah, I tapped that"
"is single"
"oh god, no!!!!!! *death*"
I fucking love cicadas

Don't be silly, insects can't even use computers, let alone create an account on Facebook

But if they could...
EEER. EEEEER. EEEEER.
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRR.

I know plenty of people who don't know how to use a computer and yet can make an account on Facebook.
Sadly.
Most places seem to get them only ever so often, here in Toledo we get cicadas every year. I have always thought they were pretty cool. I like how they leave their husks hanging on trees.
Cicadas feature way too often in anime
I remember finding a lone one after most of them had already finished swarming the area, it was late to the party :frown:
Their such a nice thing to hear in the summer...
They don't bother me that much.
The husks are they leave hanging on trees are cool. Not worth the deafening noise though. If you never heard them then consider yourself lucky.
op's got it wrong
it's the junebugs that are fucking annoying as hell

Cicadas are fucking awesome.
Hell, I find them (or at least the ones in my area) kinda cute.
The sound they make is a classic sign of summer. But once I knew what was making them I became disgusted.
Those things flew into my mom's hair when I lived in New Mexico. They are so disgusting and leave their shells everywhere.

I used to burn those during the 4th of July with my sparklers.

Fun to kill
I find it really creepy to find their old skins just hanging off of a fence or side of the house when they shed.
Cicadas are interesting, actually. The nymphs live underground for 16 years, drinking from tree roots. Then they all emerge at the exact same time to shed their larval skin and become an adult. That's when they begin making their calls and looking for a mate. The females make a clicking sound rather than a screech.
If you make a clicking sound with your fingers, a male will probably try and land on you if he notices.
They're coming back soon aren't they? :toot:
there in the east too
