I have a PC I was gonna use out in my garage for playing music but just noticed the fan it is dead. Its only a 240W so will it still overheat? It'll will never be used for much more then playing music and browsing the net. I can't replace it because its a stupid proprietary power supply (well I can but I'm its stupid expensive).
Most fan sizes are standardized so you should be able to find a replacement that will fit fairly cheaply although you may need to wire a compatible plug on it, you could always attach a 12V fan and fit a standard molex socket.
It may or may not overheat in use without a fan, there is no harm testing it.
Yeah I'll have to check the fan size...its one of the weird sizes...like between 80 and 120
The one between those two sizes is 90/92mm.
Are you actually sure if the fan is dead? It might be just off and turn on whenever the unit reaches a high temperature and cause a relay circuit to kick in and power the fan on when it's needed. If your up to it you should bypass it (connect green and a black wire on the main motherboard plug) and grab a multimeter and test the voltages of the fan connector. Then your sure if it's dead or not.

If the thermistor fan control circuit is actually turning the fan off, it means it's broken. The fan should never be turned completely off because hotspots will form in various spots and start cooking components.

Ok another lesson learned I guess, I thought a fan didnt need to be on the whole time when the PSU is operational, never thought it's on non-stop.
Replaced the fan. Thanks guys
