Quick read: http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-blood-libel-20110113,0,3315967.story I hope this hasn't been posted, because I did a search of a few search terms and found nothing. If it has, rate and move on. Basically, Miss Alaska felt offended after people were disgraced at Palin for targeting Democratic Rep Gabrielle Giffords in one of Palin's anti-democratic posters that depicted democratic reps on a map with crosshairs (Article and image of the poster: http://slatest.slate.com/id/2280934/). So she released a statement against her critics, embarrasingly misusing the term "blood libel"
Journalists' impundence should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the very hatred and violence that they purport to condemn
Now, let's visit the actual meaning of blood libel. Blood libel is the false accusation that Jews would kidnap Christian children and murder them so that their blood would be used in Jewish religious rituals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_libel). So what Sarah Palin is trying to say, is that she feels that the journalists are accusing her of stealing Christian children for their blood. Quick video including the footage of a clip of her speech, quoted above: Well, congratulations Palin, and good luck redeeming yourself over that one. Also quick fact, the average child of Sarah Palin has 46.2 chromosomes.
meanwhile gabe newell scratches his ass [editline]13th January 2011[/editline] slow news day
Journalists and politicians have been personifying political races and elections as "battlegrounds" for years. In 2006 the DNC put out an ad similar to Sarah Palin's map.
Oh good lord she just can't catch a break.
I don't understand, why does this make the news? Do we have nothing better to do then pick apart everything she says?
Journalists and politicians have been personifying political races and elections as "battlegrounds" for years. In 2006 the DNC put out an ad similar to Sarah Palin's map.
Can I see it
So what Sarah Palin is trying to say, is that she feels that the journalists are accusing her of stealing Christian children for their blood.
That's not what she's saying at all you tool. It could be any word in there as long as it's negative, she could have said "Holocaust" or "Genocide" or "Scape Goats" etc for all it matters. It wasn't meant to be taken literally, it was a metaphor. If Obama said this I doubt anyone would give a rats ass, but purely because it's the 'in' thing to do we all hop on the band wagon and pick on her. Is it kind of difficult to fit that in there grammatically speaking? Yes, but she was trying to make a point. I don't understand this at all. Whenever people pick apart her speeches like this, it's like they're trying to make asses of themselves. For example, back when everyone had a shit fit when she says "I can see Russia from my kitchen." Or something to that effect. Again. METAPHOR. She lives in fucking Alaska which is very close to Russia. It was not meant to be taken literally. People also make mistakes, some people just tend to say the wrong things under pressure. Sarah Palin misuses a word, stop the presses!
oh palin you so silly
Palin's a fucking retard. Not just responding to this news article, but just over time, she's proven to be a retard.
I don't understand this at all. Whenever people pick apart her speeches like this, it's like they're trying to make asses of themselves.
That was Tina Fey, while portraying Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live. Refudiate common misconceptions! :pseudo:
Oh my god she add a new word or usage to the language in every sentence get over it already. Shakespeare innovated the language too you know. [editline]13th January 2011[/editline]
"I can see Russia from my kitchen." Or something to that effect. Again. METAPHOR. She lives in fucking Alaska
Ok first of all I don't think you know what a metaphor is. Also, in any case she said she had foreign policy experience because Alaska is close to Russia. Not only that but all of this is pretty much a reaction to Bush leaving office, she's the next person in line to make fun of for not using the only language she knows correctly.
She is not a smart lady.
i as a jew and more importantly, as a leftist, find this offensive
The other conservatives use the term properly. Palin just plucks this out from the paper and uses it in a totally different form.
Even though I don't like Sarah Palin I don't see the problem with this usage. People are being too technical and trying to use historical definitions rather than looking at it in a modern sense.
i as a jew and more importantly, as a leftist, find this offensive
oops i forgot you were jewish for the 18 billionth time remind me again
looking at it in a modern sense.
what the fuck is the modern sense i'm pretty sure there are enough words in the english language to communicate your thoughts without using the word blood libel [editline]13th January 2011[/editline]
oops i forgot you were jewish for the 18 billionth time remind me again
can it dweebbbb
Just saw this on the Colbert Report, fucking hilarious.
Even though I don't like Sarah Palin I don't see the problem with this usage. People are being too technical and trying to use historical definitions rather than looking at it in a modern sense.
because knowing what shit really means is way above what it takes to govern a country
what the fuck is the modern sense i'm pretty sure there are enough words in the english language to communicate your thoughts without using the word blood libel
I don't know dude. She could be making a historical comparison. It doesn't have to be as literal as everyone is making it seem.
I don't know dude. She could be making a historical comparison. It doesn't have to be as literal as everyone is making it seem.
that's the reason everyone thinks she's retarded the comparison makes no sense
Sarah Palin says something moronic and not a single person is surprised. It's like she has no control over what comes out of her mouth. This is pretty damn low, though, even for her.
Why do people have to criticize this woman for everything she does. I am not a supporter of her, but i do think that people should focus more an the fact the 20 people have been shot, and less on the fact that some politicians, Both on the left and right have used some possibly offensive adds. If you do not like a politician do not vote for them! What i here about on the news is not about this horrid travesty, but about political dialog.
Because Palin and her ilk have used and supported demagogue techniques, and forceful and sometimes violent rhetoric that's contributed to the current political atmosphere and possibly this shooting.
I would agree with you if you could find one piece of evidence that it is motivated by right wing political rhetoric. This was just a lunatic.
;27399688']I would agree with you if you could find one piece of evidence that it is motivated by right wing political rhetoric. I wouldn't really call this a misuse, why? Breaking down the two words "blood libel" blood, meaning kinship or common descent, and libel, defamation. So essentially, Palin is using the term as "Defamation of Kinship", not as the traditional sense of Jews stealing children. It's giving an archaic term a modern meaning, so, I don't really why this is making the news as some sort of antisemitism controversy, as it wasn't even used as such. It's even been used the same way as before, by Professor Robert Pate, in his article Blood Libel: Radical Islam’s Conscription of the Law of Defamation into a Legal Jihad against the West—and How to Stop It.
Sarah Palin wanted to be president. Instead, she got a TV show. Close enough!
his article Blood Libel: Radical Islam’s Conscription of the Law of Defamation into a Legal Jihad against the West—and How to Stop It.
except the critical difference is blood libel makes no sense when it's used this way
except the critical difference is blood libel makes no sense when it's used this way
Somewhat, he could have used a better term. In the context that Palin used, "blood libel" makes perfect sense.
