Organizers of an all First Nations sports event in B.C. are being accused of racism and discrimination for benching a status Indian player who is black.
Organizers of the All Native Basketball Tournament say Josiah Wilson can't compete because he doesn't have First Nations ancestry or "bloodlines."
Wilson, a point guard with the Heiltsuk Wolf Pack team, is of Haitian descent. He was adopted as an infant in Haiti and raised by a Heiltsuk First Nation family in Canada.
Now, Wilson's been barred from play. Instead of competing with his team and 400 other indigenous athletes from B.C. and Alaska in Prince Rupert this week in front of thousands of fans, he is at home in Calgary.
"I was kinda shocked," said Wilson, 20. "It hurts. It hurts. I've been part of the Heiltsuk tribe. I've lived up in Bella Bella, I've played basketball with the team, engaged with the community. Now this All Native committee is telling me I'm not native at all. I'm like, 'What?' I'd say [it's] racist."
It'll probably shock alot of people but first nations can also be extremely racist.
Dude should be allowed to play, he's clearly part of the community. Of course a native-only event is kinda racist in itself anyway.
Wilson said Josiah is legally adopted, is registered with the Heiltsuk First Nation and has a status Indian card. He said Josiah was allowed to compete at All Native with his team for several years.
I'm going to say something that probably wont be agreed with.
But I think that the whole 1st nations reserves things should be abolished, please, continue to exist culturally, seriously, it's important to Canada's past, but, why should a group of people be treated differently because they look different, scrap all the reserves, if aboriginals want to continue their traditions and culture do so, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't have to pay taxes and things like that.

I would fully agree with this and I don't care about any of the shit anyone says to me following this post.
The reservations, in my experience, are a really, really bad place to be. If you're not native, you're not welcome, and you better have someone vouching for you, because there's a chance you'll get beaten. Drug use is prolific on almost every reservation I know of, and alcohol has a wide spread presence that's certainly caused an abnormal amount of disruption to the lives of the natives there who don't partake. The lack of local governments, and police structures, significantly harms the communities. The lack of valid school, and education opportunities destroys the future of their children. And we let them choose this. They have free reign to use that area as they feel fit. We can't legally interrupt them. We can't legally enforce serious truancy cases. We can't legally help them with the massive drug issues like fentanyl or oxy that seem to be plaguing them at every turn.
We enable them to distance themselves from society, and do whatever they want. This is the result. Call me the devil for saying it, but we let them do this, and it's our fault. It's more of a race issue now then it realistically should be.
Sounds like he wasn't upholding the masquerade.
Native reservations are a terrible and dated concept in general. We probably should have gone with integration, and just let them keep practicing their culture under federal jurisdiction. They really are just lasting scars of racism, there's no reason we should have what amount to third-world countries in North America.
Too bad there's basically no way to have political discourse surrounding reservations, they're too much of a hair-trigger subject. There's not much that can be really done about them; it's basically political suicide, you're just begging for someone to pull the race card on basically anything you could discuss or propose.
Why do we still have native reservations exist again
They perpetuate poverty and hold natives in a simultaneous high and low position, it's just awful.
Not even counting how many of them abuse the position they've been given to run otherwise-illegal businesses

not all of them are terrible, its just they're as corrupt as any other large city, with opaque governments, poor accountability, and lots of potential wealth, the key difference is they don't have any real government oversight or electoral oversight like a city or state has

The oversight exists. However, when called out the community leaders and chiefs rally the people against the federal government.

Culturally they could do so much better without the reserves I think, I would love to see native culture expand a bit, its really quite interesting

Most overuse of commas in a post award
I have mixed feelings on native reservations. I feel it merits note that native reservations aren't by any means equal. Some tribes are very wealthy and some reservations are very prosperous, whereas others are impoverished and serve mostly as hideouts for criminals.
Without federal protection, I feel as if the natives of the Americas would have assimilated fully. Centuries of cultural exchange, intermarriage and warfare have already caused great damage to the native peoples of the Americas.
