• Nvidia driver problem - BSOD's, other errors

Hello, I'm running a 9800GT right now, Windows 7 Ultimate. The PC runs fine in Safe Mode, but any attempt to run in normal mode will get me to the desktop, but then the PC will freeze for a few moments, then BSOD. The error is "0x00000116" which is a known graphics driver error. Prior to the BSOD's occurring, I had the also common "The display driver has crashed and has been restarted successfully" problem. Any help?
OKay, so now you bumped up to Win7 Ultimate. Lets open a new thread because you magically went out and bought the ultimate version, right? Yeah.... thought so. Anyways, your card might on the fritz or the PSU might be on the way out. Have you tried rolling back your drivers to the previous last stable release?
Oops, my apologies. In my frustration I completely forgot about the previous thread. In any case, I'm using the onboard GPU (good thing it outputs HDMI!) for the time being. The 9800GT is reaching excruciatingly hot levels when even just trying to boot into Windows using it. Do you have any suggestions for a replacement card? Also, it's not the PSU, it's a near brand-new TX650W.
First, try uninstalling your current drivers. After that, boot into Safe Mode and run something like [url=http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/]Driver Sweeper[/url]. Then reinstall/roll back to the latest stable release. [editline]x[/editline] Exactly how hot is your card getting? The 9800GT is a naturally hot card- don't be surprised at the temperatures. Unless you're reaching 105 degress Celsius (the card's maximum allowable temperature), I wouldn't worry about it too much.
Can't boot into Safe Mode. Hitting F8 during start-up only gives me some weird code thing that is like a step-by-step of the BIOS bootup sequence. Can I run Driver Sweeper now? Without it being in safe mode?
You could, but more than likely it won't be as effective. To boot into Safe Mode, try [url=http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/force-windows-to-boot-into-safe-mode-without-using-the-f8-key/]this[/url]. After you're done, just remember to turn it back off.
Okay I did that, now what should I install? The most recent stable drivers? Those are the ones I had installed when the problem started.
Yes, those should work. If the problem persists, try using older drivers- I had a similar issue a while back, and I seem to remember the[url=http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_winvista_64bit_197.45_whql.html] 197.45[/url] drivers working best.
I'll try the older drivers first. Worst case scenario I don't play any PC games for a while until I get a new card. [editline]24th May 2011[/editline] They won't install because I don't have my graphics card actually plugged in. And I can't plug the card in because it'll disable the onboard graphics and I won't be able to see anything. [editline]24th May 2011[/editline] Nevermind, I've got it in Safe Mode now. [editline]24th May 2011[/editline] Okay, those old drivers are working, but my card feels like it's running extremely hot. I've got an actual PATTON industrial fan blowing into my case at the moment, and I'm trying to download a temp gauge at the moment. [editline]24th May 2011[/editline] Christ the idle temperature for the 9800GT is 64 degrees Celcius.

Yeah, I've browsed the Nvidia forums and I've read people with idle temps much higher than mine. However I think SpeedFan is fooling me, I don't quite think it's 71 degrees with the fan set to 90% duty-load. It's currently around 80-82 degrees Fahrenheit here and it's rather humid in my room, I can only imagine what this is gonna be like in the summer when it hits late 90s. Ohhhhh boy. EDIT: Actually, I cleaned out the card today. Unscrewed the bottom of it off and got all the places where dust was. I'm wondering if maybe I screwed up the thermal paste when I did that? There's this weird cotton-type thing on some of the processor units I guess, I accidentally pulled a little bit off of one because I didn't know what it was.
