Beijing, China (CNN) -- A man stabbed eight children to death and wounded five others at an elementary school in eastern China on Tuesday, local media said.
The attack took place shortly after 7 a.m. at the Experimental School in Nanping City, the state-run Xinhua news agency said.
The city, in Fujian province, is 1,486 kilometers (923 miles) from the nation's capital, Beijing.
The school, with more than 2,000 students, is considered one of the best in the city of 3 million people.
The suspect in the attack is a 41-year-old man who once worked as a doctor at a community clinic. Some news reports said he recently resigned from the position; other said he had been fired.
Looks like their gun control laws are working out well.

I'm a supporter of the right to bear arms, but what does this have to do with gun control?
This is some backwater shit hole in China.
I'd make a pun, but it would be in bad taste.
Right, as all kids carry handguns to school. Along with teachers, and resource officers.
Ugh. I hate this kind of news.

Ban firearms and people will just resort to using knives.

Still, imagine what he might have done with access to automatic weapons, which he'd have if he lived in America.
It's not pleasant to think about.
I wonder how many of the other kids asked "does this mean there's no test today?" when this happened.

I'm sure he could've got them too in China. There's a black market for those things. Ban something and it will just go underground.
I'm sure he could've got them too in China.
Then why didn't he? What I'm trying to say is that we're better off if people like this are unable to obtain firearms, especially full-auto ones.

Who knows? The gun laws aren't like that though in China. All civilians are banned from owning them. Law abiding citizens should be allowed to own firearms.

They put cat and dog in curry china may go to a whole new level.
