An asteroid the size of an aircraft carrier will pass Earth to within eight-tenths of the distance of the moon Tuesday, the closest approach to Earth of an object this size in more than 30 years.
The closest approach will occur at 6:28 p.m. ET when the asteroid passes within 202,000 miles of our planet, NASA said.
The space agency classified the asteroid as a "potentially hazardous object."
If the asteroid were to crash into Earth, it could cause a 4,000 megaton blast and a magnitude 7.0 earthquake, according to scientists at Purdue University. If it fell into the ocean, it could cause a 70-foot high tsunami within 60 miles of the crash site, the experts said.
However, the space rock, called Asteroid 2005 YU55, poses no threat of an Earth collision, according to NASA's Near Earth Object Program.
NASA plans to study the asteroid with the Goldstone radar antennas in California's Mojave Desert. Goldstone antennas are very sensitive radio telescopes used to investigate quasars, radar mapping of planets and comets.
Scientists plan to reconstruct the shape of the asteroid with a resolution as fine as 13 feet (4 meters) using the antennas. Several days of high resolution operations are also scheduled at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico.
It will also provide a rare opportunity for amateur astronomers to directly observe an asteroid with optical telescopes.
I'll be looking out for this one!
Time to whip out another end of the world theory

Silly asteroid, you're a bit early for 2012.
Will we be able to see?
Time to fap like there's no tomorrow.
Will we be able to see?
You will need a telescope for that.
Will we be able to see?
you'll need a six inch telescope and be very sure of where it's moving because its so close it will move very fast that tracking it with a telescope will be tricky
So is the time, 23.28 GMT, still correct?
You will need a telescope for that.
Binoculars won't work?
Binoculars won't work?
Can you see an aircraft carrier from >200,000 miles away with your binoculars?
If not, no.
you'll need a six inch telescope and be very sure of where it's moving because its so close it will move very fast that tracking it with a telescope will be tricky
Unless it passes in front of the sun or the moon you won't see it, because the stuff it's made from reflects very little light afaik
Can you see an aircraft carrier from >200,000 miles away with your binoculars?
If not, no.
Why would an aircraft carrier on your side of the planet be even close to 200,000 miles away
Exactly, This is an asteroid the size of an aircraft carrier zipping past earth 202,000 miles away.
Im pretty positive that binoculars are not enough.
Is it weird that I kind of want it to crash into Earth?
Is it weird that I kind of want it to crash into Earth?
Not before Skyrim.
Not before Skyrim.
Not as an "end of the world" thing, I mean. Just for the excitement and the news. I mean, come on, a giant rock from space crashing into a random place on your own planet?
That sounds like excitement to me.
[editline]8th November 2011[/editline]
You'd still get to play Skyrim.
[editline]8th November 2011[/editline]
Unless it fell on you.
[editline]8th November 2011[/editline]
Actually, that'd be a great way to go now that I think about it.
R.I.P. Will Smith
what's the name of the meteor?
Uroboros? haha
let's pull it into orbit and mine stuff.
Sorry guys i kinda farted too loud last hangover.

Which spawned an object in outer space, heading towards earth? Fucking hell man.
oh what
this thing is like six months early
RAGE is 33 percent off now, beacuse of this
oh god it's warning us
oh god it's warning us
OH SHIT
the world will turn into rage
:c!
also, this asteroid topic is very fascinating. i like that they're answering stuff.
The Elder Scrolls warned of it's return...
this asteroid is a pussy he's gonna run back off into space and avoid earth because he's a punk bitch.

But to think of it, If it crashed on earth, it would make a 4000 Megaton blast.
The nuclear bomb dropped on hiroshima was 0.02 Megatonnes.

So i have no idea how enormous crater it would leave
A large asteroid once caused the extinction of the dinosaurs
A large asteroid once caused the extinction of the dinosaurs
Birds are descendants of Dinosaurs.
This one is going to complete the job and kill all birds, like a fucking golem.
