Capaldi shocked fans by making the announcement during a BBC Radio 2 show with presenter Jo Whiley.
He said he will leave Doctor Who at the end of the year. "I feel it’s time to move on," he said.
The 58-year-old Glasgow-born star became the 12th actor to play the Doctor in 2013.
While speaking about the forthcoming 10th series, he said it would be his last.
"I feel sad, I love Doctor Who, it is a fantastic programme to work on," he said. "It can't praise the people I work with more highly, but I have always been someone that did a lot of different things."
I wonder who will replace him?

Another young actor.

I don't think you can use another in that sentence considering capaldi is anything but young :v:

Well yeah, I meant something a long the lines of Tennant and Smith. It doesn't really seem that long ago that Capaldi became the new doctor.
I'm kinda hoping it's someone a bit more serious. Like Eccleston.
It's such a shame that such talent was fucking wasted due to all of that poor fucking writing, minus one or two actually good episodes, like Flatline.
The writing had it's moments where Capaldi would really shine, but those were few and far between, he really tried to salvage it though.

Like, THIS IS FANTASTIC, the rest of the the two parter was fucking terrible, but this, THIS really show'd you just how much of a good Doctor he was, but the material failed him.
[editline]edit[/editline]
And I really do wish this last season of his to be up to his standard, I really do, because he deserves a good send-off, I just wish he'd have stuck around for the next head writer. :frown:
damn dude capaldi was such a good doctor
Capaldi will go down as one of the best Doctors, deprived of almost any good stories to go with him. What a waste. I hope this series at least tries to make up for it.

I also wanted to see at least one series with him under Chris Chibnall. So much wasted potential with Moffat at the helm.
moffat hogged two doctors way too long, really wanted the tradition of handing a doctor to a new head writer from the classic series.
ginger doctor this time plz beeb
Man I haven't even watched ANY of his run in Doctor Who yet... just kinda lost interest the moment he came on board, no idea why. I think I'll get to watching it before he bails, really curious to see how he handled it, I was always a big supporter of having a more mature actor play the doctor again for a change. But from snippits here and there I got the impression people weren't hugely impressed? Or is that really just due to poor writing and scripts? Hmmm
Ive found that I really liked the previous two Doctors but fucking hated their episodes.
Is "shocked" the right word to use when we're talking about a series where everyone knows the protagonist is going to die and come back as a new actor?

It is more of a "Who the hell is going to replace this actor who could never ever be replaced THIS TIME.
Don't care about the past 11 times, THIS DOCTOR IS THE BEST DOCTOR."
Alright folks place your bets.
My money's on Domhnall Gleeson

Yeah i don't know what happened. After capaldi's doctor the writing tanked.
It was the same fucking people writing, but the writing for Tennant and Matt's was brilliant brilliant stuff, and then it just turned into this shlock out of nowhere.
Capaldi would've been such a good doctor but something went so fuckin' wrong i don't even know how it could've happened
what is even happening to Dr. Who? they had that whole stuff about casting Capaldi and then made like what, one season then it seems like almost two years later they still haven't made any more

There was two seasons.

Has Moffat been doing the writing for long? I don't really know who has done the writing for the series.
I don't even understand how they dropped the ball so hard on Capaldi's seasons, because's he's been fantastic but the writing hasn't

Moffat, that's why.
Steven Moffat is a god-awful writer is why.
That's a shame, Capaldi was a great Doctor Who, I just hope we don't get someone as bland as Matt Smith.
Steven Moffat is a god-awful writer is why.
Well yeah, he writes himself into a corner and then resolves it with the "love solves all problems" escape card.

So god-awful that Series 8 and 9 were critically acclaimed! :downs:

95% of the reason Moffat's shit is ""critically acclaimed"" is because it's working off the backs of giants, e.g. the long running Doctor Who series and the classic Sherlock novels. It just so happens these two shows are where he got most of his awards, what a coincidence :downs:
He's a shit writer and he ultimately ruined Doctor Who; I can only hope the next writer is phenomenally better. That's only my opinion, of course, but I know I'm very much not alone in that opinion.

Press Gang and Coupling were also very well liked and they were entirely new shows.
