SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google is paying a $22.5 million fine to settle the latest regulatory case questioning the Internet search leader’s respect for people’s privacy and the integrity of its internal controls. The penalty announced Thursday by the Federal Trade Commission matches the figure reported by The Associated Press and other media outlets last month. It’s the most that the FTC has ever fined a company for a civil violation. All Google wanted to do, according to the company, was create a way for Safari users to press on a button to signal they recommended an ad. Google said it didn’t realize its tinkering altered Safari’s automatic privacy settings in a way that allowed for broader surveillance. After the circumvention was publicized in February by a graduate student at Stanford University, Google stopped the tracking on Safari. The company says it never collected any personal information. ‘‘We set the highest standards of privacy and security for our users,’’ Google said Thursday. ‘‘It’s a big company,’’ Vladeck said. ‘‘It’s grown very quickly, but the social contract is if you are going to hold on to people’s most private data, you have got to do a better job of honoring your privacy commitment.’’ Although the $22.5 million fine is a record for the FTC, it won’t leave much of a financial dent at Google. The company had $43 billion in cash at the end of June and generates $22.5 million in revenue roughly every four hours. I don't even see how this is illegal- and isn't facebook a much, much worse offender?
I'm sure facebook can just slap any bullshit into their Terms and Privacy policies, and as long as people keep agreeing with it, there's not much you can do about it.
The company had $43 billion in cash at the end of June and generates $22.5 million in revenue roughly every four hours.
haha thats fucking insane
The company had $43 billion in cash at the end of June and generates $22.5 million in revenue roughly every four hours.
So they can literally sit on their ass all day and still make buttloads of money? Okay, that's neat.
Google have also been in some trouble lately about tax evasion.
haha thats fucking insane
They probably make most of that just off ads.
So they can literally sit on their ass all day and still make buttloads of money? Okay, that's neat.
Probably not. All these servers need management. And there's a fuckload of servers to manage.
Where's my share?
I don't even see how this is illegal- and isn't facebook a much, much worse offender?
Facebook provides enough privacy settings so the only thing the public sees is just your name and that's it.
Facebook provides enough privacy settings so the only thing the public sees is just your name and that's it.
It's not that. Facebook has spyware that tracks everything you do on your browser.
It's not that. Facebook has spyware that tracks everything you do on your browser.
Really? Fuck. Well it's lucky I always go incognito
I'm starting to get annoyed at how Google has been "accidentally" collecting data they shouldn't be getting constantly over the last few years, remember when they got in trouble since their streetview camera trucks were apparently collecting data from the wi-fi routers of homes they passed?
I don't even see how this is illegal- and isn't facebook a much, much worse offender?
Yeah, but everyone sees Facebook as the kind social network, and Google as the evil data stealing big brother. [editline]Edited:[/editline] I wasn't talking about you guys, I was more talking about the common Facebook user
Wow, I guess the government only likes privacy violations when they get access too!
Facebook provides enough privacy settings so the only thing the public sees is just your name and that's it.
You and every advertiser that shakes a fistful of benjamins in FB's general direction. It's why I refuse to use the site, I value my privacy and they do not.
It's like Donald Trump getting a $75 speeding ticket. I mean shit, they generate that much money every 4 hours in profits alone, holy mother FUCK
According to my calculations, Google makes roughly 1,540 dollars a second I wish google could give me about 4 seconds worth of income so I could get braces :(
The company had $43 billion in cash at the end of June and generates $22.5 million in revenue roughly every four hours.
Where is Google's island-lair?
According to my calculations, Google makes roughly 1,540 dollars a second I wish google could give me about 4 seconds worth of income so I could get braces :(
6k for braces? Do you happen to live in US?
6k for braces? Do you happen to live in US?
Steam profile says Massachusetts, so yes, the poor sod does. Also, I wouldn't mind a few minutes of Google income.
Google give me just 20 minutes of your income, that's all I ask!
According to my calculations, Google makes roughly 1,540 dollars a second I wish google could give me about 4 seconds worth of income so I could get braces :(
6000 FUCKING DOLLARS FOR BRACES? WHAT THE FUCK
6000 FUCKING DOLLARS FOR BRACES? WHAT THE FUCK
Most likely gold plated with diamond on each tooth :v:
You and every advertiser that shakes a fistful of benjamins in FB's general direction. It's why I refuse to use the site, I value my privacy and they do not.
They value it alright, just in a more literal sense.
22 millions is spare change for google.
6k for braces? Do you happen to live in US?
Shit like $6000 braces and $40,000 surgeries are pretty typical in the US.
Bloody hell, I got my braces free on the NHS.
Kinda sucks, just as I realise "shit, my teeth are all over the shop, I could have done with braces", my NHS dental cover ended. Yeah, that shit is expensive outside of the NHS.
Shit like $6000 braces and $40,000 surgeries are pretty typical in the US.
Fuckin' hell, to think I had braces fitted for free not two months ago :v:
