Witnesses said the driver appeared to hit his head on the interior of the truck as he drove over old cars, before the vehicle drove into a crowd of spectators. CHIHUAHUA, Mexico — An out-of-control monster truck shot into a crowd of spectators at a Mexican air show, killing at least eight people and hurting 80 others, dozens seriously, officials said. Carlos Gonzalez, spokesman for the Chihuahua state prosecutors' office, said the driver appeared to have lost control of the truck after leaping over a pile of cars it was crushing during a demonstration at the "Extreme Aeroshow" on Saturday. Some witnesses said the driver appeared to have hit his head on the interior of the truck as he drove over the old cars, with at least two reporting seeing his helmet come off before the massive vehicle drove into the crowd of terrified spectators, who tried to flee. "I fell over, and when I turned around I saw the tire very close. It hit me and threw me to the other side," Jesus Manuel Ibarra, 41, said as he was treated for injuries to his arm and hip. Gonzalez said the accident killed at least one child and hurt 80 people, 46 of whom remained hospitalized early Sunday. He said the number of dead and injured could rise as officials received updated information Sunday morning. The local health system listed the names of 67 injured people on its Facebook page, calling urgently for blood donations and help from local doctors and nurses.
[editline]6th October 2013[/editline] Source
Holy crap! I've seen some close calls on Liveleak, but 8 killed. :( RIP
safety precautions what are they?
Aren't these kinds of things usually done in big arenas because of this very danger?
Were they flying monster trucks? I never heard of them being at an air show.
I can't even imagine how the driver must feel.

It's a saddening tragedy and all, but I still hope somebody recorded a video.
I was going to make a joke about Mexia but I'm too tired.

My mind saw Mexico and thought...drug cartel! I was wrong. Feel bad for the people. :\
What the fuck were they thinking. There were no safety precautions at all.
No safety barriers. When it comes to asking for it, that's about as close as you can get.

What were they thinking not having any strong barriers or multiple sets of barriers for the event.
This is what happens when the barrier to a motorsport event is people. It's why I don't feel bad at all when someone gets clipped at a rally course. You're standing right next to the road, or in most cases lack there of, where a 1.5ton vehicle is about to drive down it in a Controlled Out-of-Control manner at a high rate of speed. It's the same as standing in front of a train on the tracks for as long as you can before moving out of the way, only more dangerous
No safety barriers. When it comes to asking for it, that's about as close as you can get.
There were some barriers, but they were more for keeping the crowd off of the course than keeping the monster trucks from getting out. Events with stuff like monster trucks should be saved for appropriate locations where the crowd is out of reach of danger if anything should occur, like an arena or something of the sort.
The announcer yelling for an ambulance... shit...
that's absolutely awful and very sad :(
safety precautions what are they?
for pussies
for pussies
And the living.
These kinds of accidents are why business licenses, insurance, and regulations are necessary. When you allow people to run things as they like, they'll naturally skimp on safety in favor of profit if they can get away with. Here in the US, in Florida, there are lots of accidents involving parasailing and it turns out those businesses are unregulated. The public has to choose, safety first or money?
RIP, and well, that was a disaster waiting to happen to be quite honest.
I went to one of these makeshift monster truck shows in a little parking lot when I was really small. Even then I remember thinking that it was probably a bad idea.
This is what happens when you don't have RII (remote ignition interruptor). Officials could have shut the truck off instantly when they saw it wasn't going to stop after hitting the crush cars.
