• Samsung Brightside - Mass Storage Device Mode Rarely Works

Right, so, I'll keep this short. I have a Samsung Brightside phone, with a 16GB MicroSD card in it, and it seems that the "Mass storage USB" mode on it works on an entirely arbitrary basis. Which is to say, I can plug it into my computer, and my computer won't recognize it (it doesn't show up as mass storage, so I can't open it or anything in Windows). I can unplug it and plug it back in, same thing. But if I keep doing this, then it will eventually, on one of these attempts, recognize it and let me browse it. Unplug and plug it back in, and it goes back to not recognizing it. The vast majority of the time, it will not be detected. The phone has three USB modes - "USB Mass Storage Device," "Ask on Plug," and "Modem Mode." I have tried many times with "Ask on Plug," with it only asking a very select few amount of times. Likewise, on "USB Mass Storage Device," it rarely works. I charge my phone with a phone-to-computer USB cable, the very same cable you are supposed to be able to use (and I have used before) for USB mode. Whenever I plug the phone it, it starts to charge without fail (the battery icon changes to tell you that it's charging). Every time. I have never had it fail to charge. However, even though it's obviously connected and charging, I cannot browse the phone as a mass storage device on my computer. I can even go to Tools -> "USB Mass Storage", where it will bring up an error saying "CONNECT CABLE TO PC" - while the phone is plugged into my computer and charging! This is the second Brightside I have had now, after the first one was factory-defective and came without Opera Mini (the browser it uses) installed. However, I don't think this phone is under warranty any more, and I really don't want to get a new one. I have spent an hour or so looking this up, all to no avail. Does anyone have any possible ideas of how to remedy this? Thanks.
Are you using a USB port in the front of your computer? Try using one in the back instead. Often times, the power given to the ports on the front aren't strong enough for the device you're connecting into it.

Unfortunately, my computer is a laptop (a Sager NP9170, if that bears any relevance), which only has three USB ports: two on the left-hand side, one on the right-hand side. The farther of the left-hand USB ports I use for my USB mouse, and the right-hand side I use for my music player charger (an Apple product, which works fine). The free left-hand USB slot I use for all of my USB devices, mostly thumb-drives, all of which work fine. However, since you have suggested it, I will try plugging my phone into the other two USB slots, see if that makes any difference. Again, thanks for the reply. I shall update this post momentarily. [editline]Fish[/editline] Unplugged my mouse and my music player charger cable, and plugged the phone into each a few times. Tried with the phone set on "Ask to Plug" - unplugging phone before plugging in computer, not unplugging phone as I change ports - and with the phone set to "USB Mass Storage", again both with unplugging the phone before switching ports and not unplugging phone when switching ports. Tried all three ports, four times each. Also tried the manual connect-to-PC control on the phone on each attempt, to no avail. I monitored the device manager on my PC as well, and it had no changes throughout the processes. My conclusion is that, unfortunately, this did not resolve the issue. Anyone have any other ideas?
This is a cheap ass feature phone. If you want a cheap phone you should look for a cheap nokia or at least get an android one
Hey, I'm not sure if I'm bumping this, too late, or anything but I have the exact same problem. Basically word for word. I made an account for this. Hopefully, someone has an answer... Since I will most likely not visit this website, feel free to email me at thematrixd@hotmail.com.
