So my friend built his computer yesterday and apparently it won't post unless he presses the MemOk button on the motherboard. It starts up, then sits there, and just blackscreens until he pushes the button. When he pushes it, a red light displays and, after a bit, the motherboard posts.
The light doesn't light up before he presses the button, which I think is different from what happens in most cases when there is an actual memory problem. Furthermore, the motherboard supports 1600 DDR3 (without OCing) and the memory he got is 1600 DDR3 so I doubt there is a compatibility problem that s responsible.
I think he tried reseating the memory. Didn't help.
By the looks of the MemOK button, I'm guessing he has an ASUS board. I have an ASUS P6X58D Premium and had this issue. My solution was to manually set the RAM timings. That's what the MemOK button will do if it can't post. The reason it didn't work is because my motherboard didn't recognize my Corsair XMS3 @1600. If you happen to have the same setup as me(P6X58D Premium + Corsair XMS3) Manually set the RAM timings to 7-8-7-20 and that should work. Just letting you know in advance if by some chance we had a close to same build.

The motherboard is an ASUS M4A87TD/USB3 and the ram timings are 9-9-9-24-2N. But your information appears sound. I forgot to mention that, after posting, the motherboard displayed a message suggesting to "save the memory settings in the BIOS", or something along those lines, or do a BIOS update. Apparently, the BIOS update didn't work and the only place I found in the BIOS that looked like it had to do with memory configuration seemed to be for over-clocking or some other shady business. But it's probably what you're talking about. I'll have to give your solution a try.
It didn't work. :(

They should be compatible, right?
Edit:
The ram is in the QVL found here: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/socketAM3/M4A87TD_USB3/M4A87TD_QVL.zip
Maybe I should RMA the board? :(
Before RMA'ing anything, did you talk with tech support at G-skill? I did that with my memory and they were able to help me out. No RMA'ing needed.

I did a bit of research, I would talk with g.skill tech support. They will probably have you send your RAM back for an RMA though.
That's pretty odd. I have a pretty similar ASUS board and my RAM timings are almost exactly the same, but I've never used the MemOK! button.

Is your ram G.SKILL?
Well... No, it's Mushkin. Does G.SKILL usually do stuff like this?
