My xbox 360 has been sitting over in a corner for the past 2 months... completely dismantled. I forgot to buy the xclamp fix screws + washers and I'm gonna have to do that soon in order for it to work.
But while I'm being lazy I decided that I might as well add some form of paint to it, to make it snazzy.
I know for a fact that the 360 still works because I got the screws from a friend who was fixing his also, but he took them back after a day since he was using them in his 360.
What do I need to do in regards to painting the plastic?
I was thinking some 1200 grade sandpaper and then some dark primer + 2 finishes of matte black and possibly a design using some tape and an exacto knife.
Facepunch, I need help. I've never painted plastic, what do I need and how long will it take?
Thanks in advance.
Definitely do matte paint, glossy will look shitty. Bring it into a clean area and spraypaint it over some newspaper.
I've never personally painted plastic, but I've heard that you need to do it in a hot area or the paint will "bloom". Probably couldn't hurt to make sure you pull the box apart and keep the electronics away from any wet paint.
Paint it red, after all, da red ones go faster!

Found this from ages ago when I made some mega nerf guns and sold them to the "gangsta" 12 year olds.
Paint is expensive.
Ignore the gun specific stuff, but I guess the actual piant would follow the same guidelines: http://www.nerfhq.com/smf/index.php?topic=8410.msg96751#msg96751

And yes, completely dismanteled

:raise:
Might wanna put some clear coating on the top layer, keeps the paint for getting fucked.
Alternatively, you can just buy a skin for your box.
Be sure to sand it down so the paint sticks.

I'm sure RROD is red enough.
You need to sand it, prime it, and get some paint that will bind to plastic. Also you might want to consider putting a clear protective coat of sealer or something on it.
Paint the rings red, that way you'll never know when you've got an RROD
Aren't the sides metal?
I did it within 3 hours of painting.

I need to do one more coat tomorrow and I'm going to order the parts online to replace the x-clamps. i might cut a window in and do some improvements later on.

oh, forgot the last one

After I showed my friend he wanted me to do his and he said he'd pay $100
so i guess I'll do that and get some paint maskings, he wants me to do some form of the "blue tiger" from mw2

And thank you guys, it's going to turn out great!
I hope that fan wasn't on to dry the paint...last time i seen someone do that it ruined the paint job and they had to resend it all over again.

it wasnt on, it was just there from when I took it apart.
it was 80 degrees today :(

I'm gonna say that it was hard to get the lines right on this, i didnt want to take the time of putting it all together, then setting the tape and then taking it apart, because its a bitch to unlock the back (i'm gonna have to do it again anyway...)
here's the finished product, I think it turned out nicely. I'm going to add a new fan, a window, possibly a cold cathode, and maybe cut into the DVD drive so you can see the dvd through the window.

That is NICE.
Might do that shit on my own box.
Artistic'd.
Doesn't look half bad, do a few touch ups and it will look great.
that looks great just needs a window so you can see the disc spinning.
Bad choice for paint; it's too reflective imo

By the way, this was my case mod for the 360 that I did back in July

Which one, I wanted metallic silver for it and matte/flat black.
And that's a nice case.
Also: what do I do with the metal part in the part where I want to cut a window out.

Huh... Isn't the tray inside of an enclosure inside the case? Isn't it basically a normal dvd drive?

It will actually just all come out if you pull on it.
God damn that is so awesome.

whenever I do that it just bends in the middle (the metal)
not that i give a shit because it's coming out one way or the other, but it doesn't want to budge at all
is there something it's connected to?
[editline]11:57AM[/editline]
I am also surprised that my camera took the bottom shot so elegantly. I can't control the ISO at all

Might of just been on my case, because one of the things the screws go into was broken off. Still you can probably just brute force it off and you'll be fine, I can't think of really any good use of it.
Ok, I was able to rip that piece of metal off, but now I have a new problem.
I completely reassembled the case (put the plastic back on and attached the fans, and now it just blinks the overheating lights (2 red lights).
It said I'm supposed to let it overheat and thats what I'm doing right now, but I did it about an hour ago and nothing worked.

If it overheats as soon as you turn it on, you probably don't have the heatsinks mounted right. Just letting you know the x-clamp fix is not a permanent fix at all, it could last only up to a day or a couple months. But at some point it will RROD again. You really need to reflow it properly to keep it from happening again. I would suggest doing a few cooling mods once you get it up and running again to try to keep it from happening as soon. Extending the fan shroud over the GPU and cutting the metal fan grills on the back of the case is a good start.

If you're wondering what the hell this does, it creates better suction over the heat sink and pulls more heat off of it.
Is that duct tape over the sides?
Heatsinks are mounted right, I know because I put Arctic Alumina on it along with tightening the screws until they wouldn't turn anymore without making a grinding noise.
And there are washers on each side of the mobo for the screws.
