A convicted murderer in the US state of Utah has chosen to be executed by firing squad. When given a choice between lethal injection or being shot, Ronnie Lee Gardner told the judge: "I would like the firing squad, please." Of the 35 US states that have the death penalty, Utah is the only one to give firing squads as an option. Critics say the method is a relic from the state's Wild West past and should be abolished. The judge in Salt Lake City set Gardner's execution date for 18 June, but Gardner's lawyer said he would appeal. Correspondents say he may still petition the state parole board to commute his sentence to life imprisonment.

State legislators removed that choice in 2004 and made lethal injection the standard method - but inmates sentenced before then still have a choice. I believe this is quicker than lethal injection, although it could be seen as "cruel and unusual".
Might as well. It's probably no more painful than lethal injection.
Eh, firing squad's probably quicker than injection, if they're precise enough and hit the apricot spot on.
I'd rather be shot than Lethal injection, I've heard of Lethal injections not working before.
I would do this too, it humiliates the people who got got me in the mess, and it makes me a hardcore badass.
Bad-ass. Also if you survive the firing squad you get to walk free (you would also be the luckiest man alive). Go out with style, I hope they give him the complementary cigarette.
I'd rather be shot than Lethal injection, I've heard of Lethal injections not working before.
It is actually quite common for the receiving person of the injection to either wake up or be completely awake during the process, depending on who it is, and their psychological behavior.
I'd rather be shot than Lethal injection, I've heard of Lethal injections not working before.
What if the fellas in the firing squad were really inaccurate? :v:
It is actually quite common for the receiving person of the injection to either wake up or be completely awake during the process, depending on who it is, and their psychological behavior.
not to mention getting your brains blown out is much more badass than getting an IV in your arm and slowly dying
There's a man who is in complete control of his destiny... he can't change when he's going to die, but he chooses HOW he wants to die. I consider that very honorable.
Man I would move to Utah just to kill somebody.
I'd rather be shot.
There's a man who is in complete control of his destiny... he can't change when he's going to die, but he chooses HOW he wants to die. I consider that very honorable.
Uhh, everybody gets to choose.
Nice to see the courts gave him a fair shot.
Nice to see the courts gave him a fair shot.
Looks like they're going to let him go out with a bang.
Lucky bitch. Well not really. I love life, but I would love to be killed in that fashion, providing I have lived out my life.
what gun would they use? I would ask for a shotgun. BITS EVERYWHERE
I believe this is quicker than lethal injection, although it could be seen as "cruel and unusual".
What if they all shoot him in the leg?
Man the puns in this thread make me want to shoot myself.
Man the puns in this thread make me want to shoot myself.
Shoot me first, I cannot deal with this pun-ishment.
what gun would they use? I would ask for a shotgun. BITS EVERYWHERE
They use .30-30 rifles. There are five guys, but one will be firing a blank, and no one finds out who has the blank. It's so none of the shooters feel guilty about killing the guy.
I believe this is quicker than lethal injection, although it could be seen as "cruel and unusual".
More like "cool and unusual".
You mean four have blanks.
no, he's right.
I believe they aim for the torso, not the head.
I believe they aim for the torso, not the head.
Larger target, extremely lethal, sounds about right.
There is no official procedure for execution by firing squad. However, it is believed that five correctional officers will participate, each aiming at the inmate’s trunk. Some will have blanks and some will have live ammunition so that no one knows which gun committed the actual killing. A Utah firing squad employs 5 riflemen, 1 of whom fires a blank.
http://www.internationaljusticeproject.org/utah.cfm
It's his choice. If I was in charge of the country... OK, if I was in charge, the world would probably be in cinders. But if it was up to me to write death-penalty laws, I would make it so the convicted gets full choice of method of execution, within reason (to rule out "old age" or "parachuting into a volcano"). And as to the above poster's question about blanks, it is traditionally 3-9 shooters, with one blank, aimed at the heart.
what gun would they use? I would ask for a shotgun. BITS EVERYWHERE
I would ask for a howitzer.
