Summary
Two Series of books ran their course through my childhood into early adulthood. One was obviously Harry Potter, and the other was A Series of Unfortunate Events. The series was written by Lemony Snicket (Daniel Handler) and illustrated by Brett Helquist.
The series focuses on the lives of the Baudelaire orphans who are perused by Count Olaf, who will do anything to steal the fortune their parents left behind after their death. In the later books, a larger mystery involving a mysterious organization and its members reveals itself.
Main Characters

Count Olaf:
Count Olaf will stop at nothing to seize the Baudelaire children's fortune. Olaf is an actor, and with the help of his villainous acting troupe, he pursues the children wherever they go. Olaf is a "master" of disguise because even though he seemingly puts little effort to conceal his identity, usually only hiding the tattoo of an eye on his ankle and his single eyebrow, only the Baudelaire children seem to be able to recognize him.
Violet Baudelaire:
The eldest child of the three, Violet is a talented inventor. Often, Violet is the one to remain calm and figure out a solution to whatever problem the children are facing.
Klaus Baudelaire:
Klaus is the middle child of the three children, and a talented researcher. When the situation calls for it, Klaus will either find out a solution based on what he already knows, or will find the relevant information at whatever location they happen be staying at.
Sunny Baudelaire:
Sunny is the youngest child, and a baby. At the start of the series she cannot really speak and her only talent is biting things.
Lemony Snicket:
Lemony Snicket will sometimes reference himself and his own misfortune in the books. From his accounts, it seems he is on the run from the authorities and mourns the loss of his beloved Beatrice. He has taken it upon himself to chronicle the lives of the Baudelaire children.
Mr. Poe:
A rather incompetent, if not well meaning, banker in charge of the Baudelaire Orphans well being and fortune until Violet comes of age.

All The Wrong Questions (New Lemony Snicket Series)

Lemony Snicket signed with Egmont Publishing (UK) in August 2009 and Little, Brown and Company (U.S.) in November 2009 to begin work on a four-part children's series. The first novel is set for release in 2012.
The series will have some overlap with his previous series, A Series of Unfortunate Events, but will not involve its protagonists, the Baudelaire orphans. Daniel Handler, the author behind the Snicket pen name, clarified that the series "is mostly an entirely new story. But if you are a close reader of the series you will see some overlap. There will be something for people who are hungry for that sort of thing." He reiterated: "It does have some overlap with the series, but it's not a continuation."
The new series Daniel Handler is working on is entitled All The Wrong Questions and the first book is entitled Who Could That Be at This Hour?, which is set to release on October 23, 2012.
The series will explore Snicket's childhood at the V.F.D. and elaborate on the Great Unknown.
ALL THE WRONG QUESTIONS is Lemony Snicket’s first authorized autobiographical account of his childhood and will be told in four volumes featuring illustrations throughout by critically acclaimed artist Seth. “Who Could That Be at This Hour?”, the first volume in the series, launches nationwide in e-book, audio, and print formats on October 23, 2012, with an announced first printing of one million copies.
Drawing on events that took place during a period of his youth spent in a fading town, far from anyone he knew or trusted, Snicket chronicles his experiences as an apprentice in an organization nobody knows about. While there, he began to ask a series of questions—wrong questions that should not have been on his mind. “Who Could That Be at This Hour?” is Snicket’s account of the first wrong question.
It takes place at a time before the Baudelaire children were born.

Holy fuck OP, I was literally thinking about this yesterday.
I'm sad they only came out with the one movie.

I thought they had more planned? I pretty much forgot about these books but remember loving to read them
I love reading, and I always wanted to know the ending. But I could never be bothered to read all the way through these for reason.

The ending is sort of disappointing. Without spoiling too much, more mysteries are raised then answered. That said, i enjoyed them for what they were.
I just learned today about the second series of books coming out, and hopefully it sheds some more light on what was going on behind the scenes.
God damn, when I was a kid I read all of them, but I inevitably zoned out about halfway in. I really need to read them all again.
Loved these books when I was younger. Saw the movie in theatres, too.
holy fuck
hello portion of my childhood
This reminds me, I still need to get The Hostile Hospital in hardback, I have all of them but it in hardback, it's a paperback
I read harry potter when I was a kid, Kinda wish I read these when I was younger instead.
I've only read 4 of them I think. Vile Village, Hostile Hospital, Penultimate Peril and the End, but they were very good. So dark for kids books. I hope they come out with more movies as well because I quite enjoyed the first. It'd be difficult with the kids having gotten older though.
I also read Lemony Snicket: The Unauthorized Autobiography, which was pretty strange and hilarious.
I never knew what the fuck was up with the shit at the end of each book?
While a listing on IMDB is far from proof, there is a page for an untitled Lemony Snicket Sequel.
Here.
I'll add information about the movie later, but I thought it was pretty good. Carrey was pretty good as Olaf, and at times could actually be pretty threatening. Adapting all thirteen book would be pretty hard though, since the time span of the books is pretty short. I was thinking it could work as a miniseries or something like that...
I remember those books; loved 'em. Although I have a sinking feeling in me that I somehow didn't finish the series and we all know it isnt worth it to go back and read 10 books just so you know whats going on in the 11th
I remember doing a report on Lemony Snicket in like 5th grade, except I couldn't find any facts about him other than that he wrote the books (i.e. shitty research skills on uncovering his real name). Turned into a book report.
Was this the series that had the girl tie her hair up? I keep confusing that aspect with Artemis Fowl or something (god knows how)
I enjoyed these books quite a bit as a child. The last one left me pretty depressed though. It's a rather depressing and cynical series, I'm surprised people even market them as Children's Books.
I loved these books, used to always think of things that [sp]VFD[/sp] could mean.
I read a few of them when I was younger, they're pretty awesome.
I got into them after the movie; strange they didn't follow through with the movies. I would have loved watching them.
I think I did read one of them once and I have seen the movie. I didn't like the series tough, because they were a bit too hopless kind of stories. Maybe I should try again.
These came out that far back?
I read the first 5 or 6 in grade school.
I remember these, loved them to death.
I was just thinking about these a day or so ago...
I wish they'd go ahead and make a sequel. I loved Jim Carrey in the first movie.
Im not gonna judge the story, as I've never read it, but MAN does it look creepy as fuck.
The artwork makes me feel sad/depressed.
How come they never made a second film? I remember the first one being pretty good.
[editline]28th May 2011[/editline]
I think the whole "I'm Lemony Snicket's friend, he tells me what to say" stuff that the author says is a bit stupid though.
Great series, very dark and mysterious not even by kids standards. I'd love to see a Lord of the Rings style movie series but that will never happen.
Totally misread that as 'Count Oglaf'
I have 1-5 in the nightstand right beside me. I've read them up to the fourth but didn't pick up the book again after reading about 10 pages of the 5th one. No clue why; it's not that I didn't like the book or anything.
It's been years since I've read any of them.
3 was probably my favourite though.
I loved the series, but the movie was so terrible. Instead of being gloomy and disturbing it came out silly and annoying. Of course, Jim Carrey does that to movies...
