Breakthrough research from the University of California-San Diego could take the US military one step closer towards having cloaked aircraft and drones. Researchers Li Yi Hsu, Thomas Lepetit, and Boubacar Kante have succeeded in creating an ultra thin "dielectric metasurface cloak," which is composed of a multitude of ceramic cylinders embedded into a layer of Teflon. Like an invisibility cloak, this coating could mask objects from visible light and radio wavelengths, the Army Times notes, and the military is paying attention. “I am very excited about this work,” Kante told the Army Times.
Business Insider USA Today
Wait, it can mask visible light, holy shit
Wait, it can mask visible light, holy shit
Visible light, and radio. So would that mean the plane would be invisible to the eye and radar? That would be incredible.
one step closer to futuristic society. can the cloaking devices disguise as other things too?
They actually showed this protoype on the History show where Johnathan Frakes talked about future technology, so the OP's avatar is perfect. Back then it was bulky and only one sided.
I'm not good at this stuff, but given the stuff mentioned at the end of the article does this mean that a plane covered in this would suddenly just pop into view out the blue if you're looking towards it from the right angle?
one step closer to futuristic society
what?
one step closer to futuristic society
Or just something orwellian
So when this comes out, we'll be able to have CnC styled stealth tanks?
Wait, it can mask visible light, holy shit
No, the latter half of the article points out that it only works on one wavelength at a time currently, so no visible light yet.
what?
Cloaking is futuristic technology, was that so hard to grasp

First, even in theory, true invisibility remains a pipe dream; the objects cloaked still are in front of what's behind them. But there are also limitations to visual camouflage and radar-masking capabilities. Angle limitations lead the list. The experiment tested the cloak with light hitting at a 45 degree angle, and works effectively only within a 6-degree range of angles. Kante said his team is working on ways to expand that. His study states that the math behind the effectiveness of this experiment indicates a "large range" of angles should be possible. Also, Kante said the technology does not allow for a cloak that can hide an object from both visual and radar detection; a given cloak will only work for a fairly narrow range of wavelengths.
http://www.armytimes.com/story/military/tech/2015/09/20/breaktrough-cloaking-technology-has-militarys-attention/71960974/

Even so, will this still be more cost-effective than standard camo? Or as practical as it? I know they're exciting because this could lead exciting places maybe, but I am still cautious.
Seems like a really great way to hide shit from satellites and airborn drones because those don't usually take pictures from a side on angle
Is this a coating that could be applied? Come up with a fully integrated suit of body armor and apply this to outside, tuned to block infrared wavelengths, and you've come a lot closer to making true infiltrator troops.
Wonder what the coat actually looks like, I like to imagine that it looks like this:
extremely sensationalist and nothing like the science-fiction idea of invisibility, the article literally says it works by absorbing or "redirecting" electromagnetic waves which literally means it would just make an object black in the context of visible light
Cloaking is futuristic technology, was that so hard to grasp
not at all, but the military having cloak vehicles and whatnot doesn't automatically turn the society "futuristic" maybe it was the wording that got me confused

It's like starring into the abyss.
Oh boy, more efficient ways to bomb brown people!
Oh boy, more efficient ways to bomb brown people!
This has so little to do with bombing or the war on terror. If anything it's applications are likely to save the lives of allied troops.
Oh boy, more efficient ways to bomb brown people!
What? How in the world is that related?
What? How in the world is that related?
we already use stealth fighters and drones to drop bombs on people in the middle east this will just give them a stealthier way to do it.
we already use stealth fighters and drones to drop bombs on people in the middle east this will just give them a stealthier way to do it.
Its still not relevant
http://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1503/1503.08486.pdf white paper here.
I immediately mistrust the results of anyone who typesets their scientific paper in Microsoft Word.
Its still not relevant
I disagree. It's relevant because this breakthrough won't be used for science first, it'll be used for war. It won't be used for studying animals without being seen, or disguising certain buildings to better the landscape, it'll be used to disguise airplanes in a war against far less advanced people. Almost all breakthroughs like this have war in mind first. I just want one day, that a major breakthrough haw science in mind first.

Because its certainly never happened already. Are you just trying to troll or shitpost? No way you can be this shortsighted. I think the military has learned its lesson about expensive coatings on aircraft with the F-22. I doubt this will be used on aircraft, like the article claims.
