I was typing up a paper when my computer suddenly shut off, without any unusual noises or anything however. Because I hadn't cleaned the heatsink in a while I assumed the CPU may have overheated, so I left it alone for a few minutes and attempted to power the system back on just to make sure.
What would happen is when I pressed the power button, the hardware would start for a brief moment and then shut off. I didn't want to jump to the conclusion of a failed power supply, so I opened up the case, removed all the hardware and then rewired it all. I booted the machine up and it booted up perfectly fine, but with a catch.
Almost immediately upon booting up I heard a slight sizzling sound, and I saw smoke and a small flame near the 4-pin power connector on the motherboard. The flame and smoke subsided within the fraction of a second before I pulled the cord.
...So facepunch, I fucked something up bigtime. I just need your help identifying exactly what it was that I fucked up (please just be a fried capacitor), and more importantly whether or not it's safe to get within a fifty foot radius of that thing.
