Nothing like skyrim.
it has magic in it must be like skyrim
Why is this being compared to Skyrim otherwise, I really like the look of this
Why is this being compared to Skyrim otherwise, I really like the look of this
Because two hands magic fantasy and because it's RPS. Every time they cover a game like this it's always "X meets Y makes Z"
It's in first person and it's fantasy. Also Skyrim is popular so it gets people's attention.
it has magic in it must be like skyrim
i agree, the combat actually looks like it would be enjoyable
It's in first person and it's fantasy. Also Skyrim is popular so it gets people's attention.
Also a blatant lack of creativity and willingness to think further. Honestly the journalists content in these articles is just becoming filler, or secondary to they're own interests.
While I was watching the trailer, I was feeling more "Dark Messiah of Might and Magic", less Skyrim. Which isn't a bad thing - DMoM&M is my favorite game nobody seems to have heard of. And while I love huge open-world games like Skyrim, more linear games can focus more on good level design and tighter gameplay. Of course, since Arkane (the developers of DMoM&M) got bought by Bethesda, I suspect they were behind many of the combat improvements in Skyrim. Compare the combat magic system from Oblivion to the one in Skyrim, and you'll see what I mean. Arkane also went on to make Dishonored, another excellent game you may have heard of.
I always saw RPS as more of a blog than a journalism site.
Which is what they describe themselves as, I believe. Or at least a mixture of the two. The blog part allows them to have heavy personal opinions or biases on it, for better or worse.
Looks gorgeous
Which is what they describe themselves as, I believe. Or at least a mixture of the two. The blog part allows them to have heavy personal opinions or biases on it, for better or worse.
Well, if this is true then fair enough.
H… h… h… hey there, Lichdom. Gee, you sure are pretty. Why, you’re basically what Skyrim would’ve been if Bethesda wasn’t still using a 1000-year-old engine. You maybe want to get coffee some– [trips over an inconveniently placed chair, falls out the door, stumbles into a patch of cacti, trips over a hillside, rolls into an errant band of wild boars, loses terribly on an episode of Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader, crawls broken and defeated back to Lichdom's location] time?
what is humor
its a (semi) open world first person rpg, somethign that really only bethesda makes, and one of the devs behind this game worked on oblivion, so of course its gonna be compared to skyrim. jeezus you guys get way too uptight about article titles what a bunch of sperglords
what is humor
I stopped reading the article after that because of how horribly awkward it became.
The world, effects, enemies, and animations all look nice, the gameplay looks like it might get stale after a while, but I'll keep an eye on it.

I was so angry when the developer kept promising the Source SDK files for it over the space of a year then suddenly said 'Sorry guys, they aint coming', the game would likely still be alive if they had released those mapping tools. It was a real yonker of a game for coming out in 2006 on Source, the story was great and the graphics were even greater.

From the 1 minute video the actual gameplay seemed kinda slow and dull.
"It's like Skyrim without weapons" -IGN
so wait you play as a lich because that's like my number one boner inducer

I'm still pissed it's literally next to impossible to run it in windowed mode, practically every Source game allows that but Dark Messiah hard-sets it even if you alter it through the launch options or hit alt-enter. Pisses me off, I always play windowed (it makes it run better). Still, it was absurdly fun, and this game looks interesting. I love liches and I love spellcasting.

This is really interesting to me. I am a sucker for games with really good magic systems that are just plain satisfying to use, especially if they are a little unorthodox. Some examples come to mind like Morrowind, Arx Fatalis, and Dark Messiah as has been said. Even the abilities in something like Warframe have a good feel and impact to them, and some really nice audio and visual feedback of "Hey, this big attack you unleashed is doing damage and you are a badass." What I want to see, is a game which makes magic feel POWERFUL, I want my fireball to have impact, I want it to unleash a concussive wave of force and blow things apart, I want my ice spear to throw dudes off of their feet and impale them to the wall, my wind shear to launch the bodies of unsuspecting fools 30 feet across a battlement to crush against the far stone wall. Hopefully we get impact.
Why is this being compared to Skyrim otherwise, I really like the look of this
<one of the devs worked extensively on oblivion>
So what I'm gathering here is that Skyrim - Skyrim + CryEngine + Lichdom = Lichdom
Which is what they describe themselves as, I believe. Or at least a mixture of the two. The blog part allows them to have heavy personal opinions or biases on it, for better or worse.
that's what all game "news" sites call themselves it's so they can pass off their shitty writers and lack of professionalism without feeling bad about themselves
At this point, I just switched off as soon as I read that the article was from Rock, Paper, Shotgun :/
This game itself looks interesting, I'll be keeping tabs on it for sure
