Thousands of people in vulnerable areas of the Philippines are being relocated as the strongest storm on the planet so far this year spins toward the country.
With sustained winds of 305 km/h (190 mph) and gusts as strong as 370 km/h (230 mph), Super Typhoon Haiyan was churning across the Western Pacific toward the central Philippines as one of the most intense tropical cyclones ever recorded.
Its wind strength makes it equivalent to an exceptionally strong Category 5 hurricane.
This just in: Now possibly the Strongest Cyclone in World History, these values are not confirmed.
Winds estimated to be at 170kt (195mph, 315km/h), pressure estimated to be at 858mb (New world record, old record is from Super Typhoon Tip at 870mb)

This thing is batshit crazy. According to Satellite estimates, this thing has a pressure of 887mb, making it stronger than Hurricane Katrina by a sizable amount
And this is not expected to weaken before landfall, either. Complete and Total devastation to where the eye makes landfall with those kinds of winds
This is why mankind has to remember that compared to nature (at least at present) we're still ants, and if it decides to go bonkers on us, there ain't a damn thing we can do about it.
Wow. Thats all I can really say.
You know there's gonna be some crazy guy who will refuse to leave his house when they're evacuating people and ignore how fuckhuge this thing is.

Not necessarily true, in this case, we're able to prepare for the storm and evacuate people.
If nature goes bonkers on us, we can prepare, rebuild, and survive, and in some cases, even prevent. What you said would have been true fifty years ago, but today we're able to prepare and even prevent major devastation in many places around the world.
r.i.p in peace philippines

And Along with Brunei and Vietnam.
damn shame they missed out on calling it Super Typhoon Saiyan
damn shame they missed out on calling it Super Typhoon Saiyan
Damnit dude. Well enjoy your ratings, I guess...
And Along with Brunei and Vietnam.
Looking at that map it doesn't look like it's anywhere near Brunei :v:
(unless theres some weird meteorological shit and it's gonna swoop down to malaysia and twat it in which case oops)

That's what I read the title as.
This thing make hurricanes look child's play, I'm especially glad I live well away from any oceans and all I have to worry about here are puny tornadoes.
FUCK
My cousin has the majority of his family over there
Damnit dude. Well enjoy your ratings, I guess...
He could have executed it better.
I am a true Super Haiyan

Wait, is it higher or lower pressure that's worse, because that's lower than the previous.

That's all loss and damage mitigation. I think the point he was trying to make is that there's no way to 'fight the hurricane' so to speak. Like ants, we can build and rebuild all we want, but we can't really stop mother nature from stomping down on us.
Wait, is it higher or lower pressure that's worse, because that's lower than the previous.
Lower = worse, hence a Low Pressure Area
Wow. Thats all I can really say.
Just looking at the numbers.. I am left speechless.
Wow. Thats all I can really say.
Oh man, if you of all people are speechless of something relating to the ocean, I fear for those affected.

Lol, you serious? Nature ain't shit.
It's not going to be bad as the Bhola Cyclone.
It's not going to be bad as the Bhola Cyclone.
So far, the data seems to suggest the sustained winds will be higher than the gusts in Bhola..
I guess we will have to wait and see.
It's not going to be bad as the Bhola Cyclone.
Seems like it'll be worse.
and of course its center is hitting the part of the country where my cousins live.
My dad just went to our holiday home in the Philippines as well, he's in for a fun time
Mother Nature really wants us dead, doesn't she?
Haiyan has made landfall at Record Intensity, and set a new worldwide record for the most intense landfalling Tropical Cyclone in history. The old record was Hurricane Camille in the Atlantic Ocean in 1969, with a 190mph sustained wind landfall.
Haiyan made landfall with winds of 195mph, and it looks like a pressure of 884mb. No modern building is designed to handle winds of that speed

Well actually there is this new-fangled technology called cloud-seeding. Not only can it promote rain, but it can influence the path of a storm. We could conceivably redirect it away slightly.
Besides, it's not like we've ever had repercussions for putting ourselves above nature....
any news on damage? i bet landfall fucked some serious shit up, and not in a good way.

that is one tight hole.
