Who else would have ported it into VR
[editline]28th September 2015[/editline]
John fucking Carmack everyone.
he is such a baby lmao
Notch later admitted that he was very reactionary to the whole situation
A lot of people were really fuckin reactionary to it for no reason, not just Notch. The FP thread for the news about it was filled with doom and gloom and then literally nothing came of it, same with basically any other website.
Honestly I forgot Facebook even owned them
Honestly I forgot Facebook even owned them
Same here. I remember thinking how Oculus and Mojang could be the next big "independent" thing in the industry, but then they both sold out to big corporations. Can't fight it.

I just sat on my ass and laughed really hard over it
John Carmack personally ported Minecraft to VR: "It's the single most important application that we can do"
That sentence might be a bit controversial but when you consider the range of audiences Minecraft takes in he might be right. Not only is minecraft popular to an insane degree among kids, nearly all of us have played it as well. It could be really important to increasing VR's appeal to a wider market
he is such a baby lmao
I remember when he did that
Tbh I respect notch wholly but I felt disappointed by his arrogance in that decision.
I still think he's a great dude though

not only that, but Minecraft is literally the perfect starting game for getting into VR
it's extremely simple, and shows a good example of massive structures, incredibly dynamic terrain, etc.

Facebook owns Instagram and a bunch of other companies as well
however, they don't even dare touch anything. They buy 'thing', and simply, the popularity of facebook alone instantly makes 'thing' hyper-successful.
if you ever start a company and facebook offers to buy it, absolutely do it.
Now, make a VR Angry Birds game, and you've got half the planet hyped for VR.

first person angry birds
only 29.99$

I was one of the only people who saw potential in the Facebook acquisition. I had the same worries we all did, but I was at least willing to give it a shot. I nearly got crucified for it, though, because everyone here was so anti-Facebook at the time.
Now look where we are.
Facebook seems to be a really good investment capital firm. It's amazing what Oculus has been able to do with their money. We've come from a developer kit using a tablet screen, to a consumer model using entirely custom-built hardware. There's no way they could have done that if they hadn't sold to Facebook.

that actually sounds fun.
The Minecraft source code is so shitty that only John Carmack can work with it.

I'm sure they used the mobile version instead of the original Java Minecraft. Same for the Windows 10 version.
Minecraft VR is one of the most fun VR experience I've played that wasn't designed with VR in mind. I'm really excited to see what the official port will look like.

A shame really. The Java version could use a huge rewrite in the underlying technology from people who know what they're actually doing, so it could perform a lot better, enabling more to be done.

Honestly, if the Win10 version catches up to the Java one and gets an actual modding API then fuck the Java version.
Honestly I forgot Facebook even owned them
WhatsApp and Instagram are owned by Facebook too but you never really notice. I always assumed they'd run Oculus at arms-length in much the same way, and they have.
Carmack's a fucking genius, he probably did this with his laptop while taking a shit in the office bathroom
Honestly I forgot Facebook even owned them
I remember thinking only good could come of it, seeing as facebook has a decent track record for their acquisitions

FB is trying to diversify. They don't want to live and die as just a social network, so instead they invest in order to become a big tech company like Google / Yahoo etc. Yahoo is actually a great example because while their main services tanked, they were kept afloat by the many companies they acquired over time.
