Using a sim card from my contract phone in another phone?

I have a phone thats on an 18 month contract, I would like to sell it and buy an Xperia which is unlocked, but will I be able to use the sim card from the old phone and put it in the Xperia?

Also, my contract is with o2 if that helps.

Just make sure to disable data if its not part of your contract.
