Australia's deaf community is alarmed the Federal Government is considering a proposal to remove captioning requirements for television broadcasters.
The Government wants to take away the requirement that all free-to-air broadcasters must complete an annual compliance report.
Currently free-to-air television broadcasters have to provide 100 per cent captioning from 6:00am until midnight.
Former disability discrimination commissioner Graeme Innes said there was concern that could change under the new proposal.
"What they do is make it easier for the industry not to comply with these captions requirements, and people who are deaf are already concerned that sometimes quality of captions is not maintained," he said.
"This will put their captions at further risk."
A spokesman for the federal Department of Communications said the change would provide greater flexibility, and a complaints-based approach was more appropriate as part of the Government's deregulation agenda.
What? This is fucking bullshit, my Grandma is deaf and all she watches TV in the afternoon till Bed. If they get rid of this then she is going to be really upset, we already have a fucking hard time finding films for her to watch that has Subtitles, and old ones as well. Being deaf at her age from what I can see and assume is bloody horrible, she will be bored all the time. And I don't want that.

Pfff Business Minister Burce Walson is just saying your grandmother is a lazy, cheezle eating TV watcher and removing the captions will get her off her lazy backside and on to Team Australia.
It's just one thing after another with this government isn't it?
Thanks, Abbott.
I like watching my shows/movies with subtitles. Anyway, greater flexibility for what? There is NO reason to not have subtitles whatsoever.
Next they're going to remove wheelchair access ramps and braille from signs.
wtf i always have them on fuck that
Abbott is literally picking on disabled people.
So how's the government going to justify this? Say that broadcasters will 'compete with each other' and will still offer closed captions? Just like uni's will 'compete with each other' on price after the fee deregulation, although they can already compete with each other on that (regulation sets a maximum price) but they don't?
At this rate it won't be long until that pic of Abbot eating a kitten becomes reality.
"It was ONE TIME"
While what they're doing is incredibly stupid, you're all acting as if they're making it illegal to put captions on films/TV. What they ARE doing, is making it no longer required (which is still stupid)
edit: Actually, I just re-reread the Source, and it seems they're just taking away the requirement for completing a compliance report. Still dumb though.
how does this help anyone
someone remind me how much longer we need to put up with this joker for

On or before the 14th of January 2017.
I be pissed off at this too if I was Australian...
You don't just turn off closed caption for good and ignore the deaf community... that is one dickish move that one can make. Don't remove closed captions at all, most of us perfer (good) subtitles when it comes down to reading something. I enabled closed caption/subtitles on my games so I can understand wtf they are talking about half the time when you trying to learn something new and try to use that new learned knowledge by applying it on an experiment... like a tutorial in a game.
I highly doubt this would pass anyway, it's too absurd and controversial
I still dream of a double dissolution
I just hope these uni things don't happen
But surely there is enough time for him to do that. Hopefully if I'm still in when he's replaced they'll repeal it or something.
To be honest considering how much money centrelink has paid me I'm happy to pay back my education but I just hope it's not too fast.
i'm sure abbott has a list of horrible shit to do when he's bored, what an evil little man
So what is the Abbott government expecting to gain from this change? Or have they realized they are going to be f**ked over at the next election so have decided to cause the most damage possible for the next government to clean up

How is he helping them by possibly getting rid of subtitles?
How is he helping them by possibly getting rid of subtitles?
They won't have to spend resources on them.
How is he helping them by possibly getting rid of subtitles?
uh... it's deregulation pal. currently they're all mandated to add subtitles, so obviously not having to add subtitles and not having to do annual reports to ensure they are complying with the legislature is a pretty tangible benefit ?
Well it's not like this government actually listens to people, let alone read them.
They're changing the industry standard to government standard (no standards whatsoever), that's all.

Why doesn't she read books? A good book helps against boredom. Unless she has another disability, why can't she do something besides TV to entertain her? Watching TV all day is not good for you at any age.

Netflix has subtitles for everything, just in case she has internet and it's something you haven't thought of.
