Guy Who Created The TSA Says It's Failed, And It's Time To Dismantle It
from the say-that-again dept
One of the politicians instrumental in creating the TSA, Rep. John Mica, who wrote the legislation that established the TSA, has apparently decided that the whole thing has been a failure and should be dismantled. He notes that "the whole program has been hijacked by bureaucrats."
“It mushroomed into an army,” Mica said. “It’s gone from a couple-billion-dollar enterprise to close to $9 billion.”
As for keeping the American public safe, Mica says, “They’ve failed to actually detect any threat in 10 years.”
“Everything they have done has been reactive. They take shoes off because of [shoe-bomber] Richard Reid, passengers are patted down because of the diaper bomber, and you can’t pack liquids because the British uncovered a plot using liquids,” Mica said.
“It’s an agency that is always one step out of step,” Mica said.
It cost $1 billion just to train workers, which now number more than 62,000, and “they actually trained more workers than they have on the job,” Mica said.
“The whole thing is a complete fiasco,” Mica said. There's a lot more at that link. Now, one could (and perhaps should) note that when Mica wrote the legislation, his particular political party was in power, and now it's not. So the cynical voice might say that his words are somewhat politically motivated. And one can (and probably should) ask how it was that Mica didn't expect this kind of result. This is what the government does. It creates agencies that are then "hijacked by bureaucrats." While it's nice to see him realizing this now, it's too bad he didn't see it back then.

Can't say I disagree to be honest!

It should never have been formed in the first place.
It should never have been formed in the first place.
Eh, it had its reasons to be formed, but it's a piece of shit.
So the creator of the TSA can see its a waste of time and money to pat down kids and make old ladies take out their breasts, but everyone in power cant see this? What the fuck?
Replace TSA with more Air Marshals. All of the problems solved and almost everything improved.
And to think some actually wanted to shut the air marshals down, jeez

NO.
the TSA wants to now shut down the TSA?
Crazy world.
No terrorist attacks have happened in US airports or airplanes recently for all I know even though the security apparently was total shit.
Edit: Makes you wonder the necessity of the massive security precautions.
Air Marshals are the way to go, the least invasive and most effective form of attack prevention I'd think
-Edit-
I'd also say the knowledge that an Air Marshal was on board would be a major deterrent for crime in these cases since they could be anyone in the crowd.
Air Marshals are the way to go, the least invasive and most effective form of prevention I'd think
Seeing as the concern with aircraft is them being hijacked and used as bombs, the use of air marshals over gate security seems like the infinitely better course of action, yeah.
Someone in America done gone and did some good. But is not a politician.
the goal of the tsa is to eliminate a threat of an attack before the plane even leaves the airport, increasing air marshal activity sounds kind of counter productive...
although i agree the TSA is an eyesore to "homeland security" i believe if they change up their protocol they can still keep the people safe without being power tripping rapists
Nothing pisses me off more than bureaucracy. It is literally the cause of 99 percent of the global problems we all face. I don't understand why some things need to go through hundreds of people before they are approved. They only waste time, money, and they are extremely ineffective and inefficient.
Words
TSA hasn't been very successful whatsoever, and what better way to determine if someone has the malign planned than to witness it?
Air Marshals are specialists in what they do.
Furthermore, like I had said earlier they are non-invasive whatsoever in comparison to the TSA.
I get the feeling that the oppressive security measures in place have made terrorists think, "ah, fuck it" and find better ways of blowing shit up. Why go to so much work to bypass that security when you can so much more easily work out other bomb-carrying media?
Instead of buying/developing new kinds of explosives that pack more power for less and are easily concealable and don't trip alarms and you can pack them into baggage without violating the liquids rules, or figuring out some new rigging for body-mounted explosives, they could so much more easily just fill a truck with shrapnel and fertilizer and drive it into a crowded place, like that one guy tried to in Times Square.
Oh shit my dad works there, and said we would be moving to china to work at their airlines if TSA closed down. No fucking way i'm going to live in china.
I think the TSA is just one of the gears in a larger plan to keep us all repressed and to keep us living in constant fear. TSA - Terrorists Search Americans.
All these new security protocols are just designed to take our freedoms away one at a time.
I wonder when there's going to be an uprising.

It's not that bad..... I <3 BeiJing.
Thing is, now that the TSA is active, it's not going down and nothing he says will change that.
The guy actually said to privatize it. He's a greedy fuck that want's to be able to profit from the TSA.
But nothing is better than a sensationalist headline, eh?

High five!
Rep. John Mica was quoted as saying, "WHAT HATH MY MORTAL HANDS WROUGHT!?"

Profit/money is a good motivator and most of the time, the private sector does better than the government. I have yet to see a government-ran program NOT be half-assed.
Honestly, metal detectors and air marshals would probably be fine.
privatize the airline industry all day every day
privatize the airline industry all day every day
no thanks i'd like some regulated leg room

I've seen plenty of private run business/programs/ventures/whatever be half assed.
