Police have confirmed a device in the Fishergate Shopping Centre was planted deliberately, and was intended to endanger life.
The Army has sent a remote bomb disposal device into the centre after hundreds of shoppers were evacuated due to a ‘suspicious device going off’.
The remote device is searching every bin in and around the shopping centre and police say there are currently no further details about the nature of the device, which appears to have gone off causing no real damage and no injuries.
Chief Superintendent James Lee confirmed: Fishergate Shopping Centre will be closed for the majority of the day.”
Lancashire Police were called at around 9.10am today to a report that a device had been found within a bin at Preston’s Fishergate Shopping Centre. The shopping centre management decided to evacuate the centre as a precaution.
Police are in attendance at the centre and are asking the public to stay away from the area.
A police spokesman said: “The safety of the public is our top priority and so the Fishergate Centre has been evacuated as a precaution and is currently closed. The rest of Preston town centre remains open for business.
“Our colleagues from the EOD have been called to assist us with our inquiries and to help in the disposal of the device.”
Roads surrounding the Fishergate Centre are still closed to vehicular traffic but pedestrians can walk along Fishergate and past the centre.
Students at the University of Central Lancashire have all been warned about the incident, and shoppers have spoken of their experiences.
Ann Garner, 49, from Hutton, said: “I can’t even get my car out of the car park.
“My husband has had a hip operation and I can’t get home to him.
“I was in Card Factory and I was looking at cards and a security guard came in and said something to one of the assistants.
“The next thing I knew, the alarms were going off and we got told to leave the building.
“It was just before 10am.
“I just wanted to nip and get cards and get out but I can’t even get my car.”
And Peter Billington, Secretary of the Lancashire Association of Trades Union Councils (LATUC), said plans for a trade union protest outside county hall at 1.30pm were due to go ahead as planned.
He reported: “There’s still lots of police blocking off all roads round the Fishergate Centre, but pedestrians can get past.”
The LATUC had urged union members opposed to the current Trade Union Bill going through parliament to gather at the Pitt St entrance to county hall at 1.30pm as Lancashire County Council was due to start its December full council meeting. The intention was to highlight the low turnout at electoral polls which resulted in the election of Tory County Councillors and Lancashire MPs.

Preston Bus Ltd tweeted to say: “Fishergate and Corporation Street now reopened in Preston, Butler Street still closed. Buses back to normal routes, delays still possible for a while.

The bomb disposal team are in place to deal with the device.

Traffic is very slow at the junction between Mount Street and Butler Street.

There's a video in the 2nd link. This is my town where I'm living atm, this happens too regularly and we've been told that we might aswell not go into town today just to be safe. It's too real where I come from, and I know a lot of people are seeing me say this regularly in SH but that's because on a regular basis it seems as though my life has been in danger by coincidentally living in somewhat of a "hotspot" for extremism and the flurry of bomb threats that follow it.
Seems wierd when it's usually busier at the weekend, scary stuff though. Got any links to previous threats? I'm Preston based as well ( Bloody loads of us) I'm in there every Sat...

I'm sorry, I don't think the other times have made it into the media :/ That, or I didn't check at the time. I happened to stumble into this due to friends
It seems bomb scares like this never make it into national media, which is unusual. I wonder if they have been mandated not to report bomb scares.

what the fuck is that last comment
we haven't had terrorism warnings ever???
we aren't a hotspot????
bro all we have is a bunch of different colored people who live in the lil' terraced houses, not a secret isis plot to replace the council
the closest thing to terrorism we have is when they put the fairground rides on the flag market, makes it a nightmare to get around town
also holy shit how many facepunchers actually live here, i thought i was one of three

Seems like it's a hotbed of extremist Facepunchers

Careful there son they're listening :ninja:
To be honest right, I have no clue at all why Preston would be aimed at in this. There is like no reason to attack here of all places like there's nothing too important and it's not exactly densely populated, especially since all the students have left.

shit lmao how many fp'ers are actually at uclan the fuck
Another Uclan student here. My flatmate works in fishergate and she wasn't worried about this at all. Apparently it was an asthma inhaler and matches chucked in a bin. Hardly a terrorist bomb scare.

Fuck me their grooming eachother now,
Uhhhhhh mods?!
also our SU is a joke, im not sure if a union can be any more irrelevant to the people it's meant to be serving
That's why it needs a Facepunch society; activities include being surprised that Facepunchers exist in real life, the worship of Garry and wearing gasmasks.
Society will convene on the first floor of The Adelphi unless it is experiencing its 4th makeover in five years in which case it will meet behind the bins at Chester's Chicken.
Anyway, back to the mad bomber of Fishergate.
Has there been any updates on this bar the guy getting caught? I've been hearing a rumor that the incendiary device was a firelighter strapped to a can of WD-40 and a lighter. Or something like that, all I've heard is that was very very crude so this may be just the actions of some paranoid nut and not some master terrorist.
