• Source Engine AA and AF

I want to know which AA and AF level should I choose for best looking without a lot of performance drop. For example, I heard there weren't any differences between 2xAA and 8xAA, or 4xAF and 16xAF.
uh what graphics card do you have... anything over an 8800 should pretty much be able to max both of those out.
uh yeah there's a difference between all of those just use 16x AF, it doesn't affect performance at all and yeah you should be able to use 4x AA with no problems
I have an ATI HD Radeon 5770.
yeah, 16x AF and 4x AA [editline]07:40PM[/editline] 4x MSAA
People who say there is no difference between 2xaa and 8xaa are idiots, or blind. Unless you mean performance, in which case, that's on a case by case basis.
max everything then? 5770 should have no problem doing that
I have a 5770. I max everything out (8x msaa + 16x af + high settings) with the screen resolution of 1440 x 900.
The 5770 eats source games. I get like 300 fps on all highest settings at 1680x1050. You should have no problems.
Ok, thanks guys. [editline]10:08PM[/editline] Help, I get some stutter online while playing. Not sure if it's AA or AF. But some people say it's because of that.
Just get dual 5970's and then you won't ever have to worry about graphics settings (unless you are playing quake 3 or AVP (the old one))
Server side.
no?
My 8800GTS gives me plenty of FPS in Source with both AA and AF set to 16x.
no?
I mean that it has to do with connectivity to the server most likely. Did you have a high ping?
4x AA, 16AF. 4x AA strikes a good balance between image quality and performance, 16x AF might as well be free.
Yeah, the AA is much more demanding. Even 8x AF can look bad in some areas.

But some people say it's because of that.
Type cl_showfps 1 (or 2) in console in any source game to display the current framerate. And try not to alt-tab out of the game, if i do it and return to the game it really rapes my performance for some reason. Also, your card is capable of fully maxing out source, don't listen to any people who say otherwise. Go for 16x AF and 8x AA. (8x is the max, right?)
Which game is it? Avs with realtime scanning can cause stuttering in tf2.
Tell us the rest of your specs.
