I have a laptop now that can run Crysis and Metro but it struggles on higher settings. So I'm going to build a desktop, something that I can upgrade in the future. Budget is pretty tight at $600 because i'm going to have to buy a copy of Windows 7 too.
After looking around on Newegg I found this deal, http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.692053. I'm wondering if this would be a good idea or could I possibly build it cheaper? To me the deal seems pretty good but I'm not really an expert on building computers so I figured I better get some input before deciding. Thanks for any help.
do you think you can stretch it just a bit? I've got 2 options, one at $625 and the other at $650.
option 1: SLI capable, but more expensive

option 2: can't do SLI, but cheaper

I guess it depends on how upgradable you want your computer to be. Or, you can get the cheaper build, and in the future, upgrade the GPU to an ATI one, and Crossfire from there
That combo deal you have is okay, but is barley upgradeable.
If anything, you're going to want to get an AM3+ or 1155 socket motherboard for Bulldozer or Sandy Bridge-E in the future. So Jaeheads builds are pretty good.
Is your budget $700 if we include a Windows 7 license in the build itself? Because that's what you made it sound like.

Both of those look pretty good, I would like it to be SLI/Crossfire ready. But what I meant is I have $700 to spend for the computer and windows. I'm also not worried about the shipping cost as long as it's reasonable so don't worry about that either.
How does this look for a little over $600 not including windows.

if you're going for an ATI card grab the 955/MSI 970 combo

$609, better PSU, roomier case, bigger HDD

This looks really nice. I was looking at the AMD/ATi stuff because it's cheaper than Intel/nVidia. Is there a big difference between something like the 955 black edition and the core i5-2500? What I'm asking is, are the Intel processors really worth the price difference or is it not that big of a deal?
yeah the 2500 is a much, much better processor than the 955
but you're going to have a hard time fitting that into your budget without causing imbalance

Well, you're kind of asking a controversial question, Intel vs. AMD. And generally, in most cases, Intel does come out on top for performance per core. So they are "worth it." AMD is really geared towards budget builds, like the one you are planning. And yes, there is a huge difference between the 2500K(I think that's the i5 you were looking at) and the Phenom II x4. Also, since the 955 is quite dated, these benchmarks will not do AMD justice, as you simply cannot compare the 2, but here it is anyway.

As you can see, the 2500K annihilates the 955 in every category. If you are still on the fence on which CPU to get, I think the results speak for themselves.
Ok here's what I've decided on.

I already have a DVD drive and a copy of Windows. Is this everything I need or am I missing something?
I've noticed you keep trying to buy the 965 over the 955. Can I ask why?
I've noticed you keep trying to buy the 965 over the 955. Can I ask why?
No particular reason, I just found that bundle with the 6870. The 965 is only like $15 more and the benchmarks are better.
well, you can combo the 955 with the MSI 970, and the XFX 6870 costs less than the Sapphire, since the Sapphire one has shipping charges.
Also, yeah, I can see where you're coming from with the 965 and how that extra clock might look appealing, but trust me, you can match that clock yourself and even surpass it in minutes, even on the stock fan
[editline]wef[/editline]
Another thing, now you're now probably thinking that you don't want to bother with overclocking, due to fear of messing something up, but because the 955 is a BE processor, it's seriously easy, and I'm sure numerous members here, including myself, are willing to give you directions if you need them
The extra money you are paying for the 965 is basically throwing your money. It's a factory OC that you can do yourself.
Honestly you should really invest what you have towards a 2500K. Much better use of money, instead of wasting your money on a half-assed system.

I know that it's really easy to overclock, I planned on overclocking the 965 when i got it. Thanks for the info though, I'm gonna go with the 955 and the MSI 970.
I don't like suggesting this to everyone, but do you have a local Micro Center? They have a deal that if you buy an AMD proccessor, you get a free motherboard.
