Hello Facepunch,
A friend of mine is interested in making videos, he wants to record gaming and tutorial videos on his PC as well as using his camera to film videos.
What is currently the best screen recording software that he could use?
I've heard fraps is good screen recording software, however are there any free/better alternatives?
As well he'll also need some decent video editing software, any suggestions on that? (Anything other than 'Windows Movie Maker')
If he's got an nvidia card that supports it, I've have good experience with Shadowplay (which is a part of Geforce Experience).
Dxtory is great in my experience, and virtual dubs good for compression / cuts but it's very "Bare bones" while still being solid (much less bare than WMM)
with dxtory you should use http://lags.leetcode.net/codec.html
shadow play is great but my computer actually bluescreens just from enabling it. When it works its great, but geforce experience is a horribly shitty program that has no use and just makes everything very hard to do.

fraps is absolutely shit, it's a less feature rich and less optimized dxtory pretty much. IT's really well known but it'll just give you a huge fps drop, while dxtory won't lock the framerate at the video recordings framerate
Shadowplay needs to be your first choice of investigation. If your card is a Nvidia GTX 650 or newer it should work. Maybe 660.
Shadowplay is actually just software that uses those cards special video encoding hardware. It means saving compressed ready-to-upload 1080p (4K starting with GTX 970 and a 4K monitor) 60fps video of your desktop and games with zero recording-induced lag, because the GPU has a special section dedicated to the task, and doesn't bother the CPU to do it more slowly. Fraps/dxtory are CPU based.
The video encoder on these cards is called NVENC. Steam broadcasting streams and in-home streaming use NVENC on computers that have cards with it.
Shadowplay is just a software wrapper for the NVENC encoder.
OBS can also record using NVENC, but in my experience doesn't work as well as shadowplay, somehow lagging.
For the budget stuff I'd look at Sony Vegas software. Just look and see what fits your bill and give it a go, and give dxtory a go, too.
Shadowplay looks pretty neat, however he has a ATI Radeon HD5450.
I've spoken to him about OBS and Dxtory, he said he'll give OBS a try since it's free.
Now what's left is deciding on a suitable video editing software. He said he's willing to pay for this, if it's easy to use and has many features.
We've looked at Adobe Premier, Wondershare Filmora, Lightworks and Sony Vegas Pro. For you video editors, what software have you all had the best experience when editing videos? What's the best for adding effects, adding overlays and creating an intros, easy to delete and add clips? Is there anything that's more affordable? (Again anything other than 'Window Movie Maker', because he seems to hate it and had a terrible experience using it. He wants something a bit more advanced that is rich in features.)
also, dxtory is a paid recording software but everything except recording video is uncapped
you can record video just, it has a water mark and is timed
be warned though it gets funny at times with rare games. It instantly crashes gta5 and wolfenstein: TNO for me

Seconded. I bought DXstory and it crashes out Dark Souls as well. Otherwise it works amazing with most other games.
I'd go with OBS. Also with Adobe's creative cloud thing you might be able to secure a copy of Premiere for cheap (for a year or however long you want it, its a subscription thing)
If I were to choose between Premiere Pro through a CC subscription or Vegas through a one-time purchase, I'd take Vegas any day unless I had a source of income already that could already a CC subscription.
For PP CS6 (one-time) vs Vegas, then I'll give a slight edge to PP considering with CS6 it's also a one-time lumpsum. But I think Vegas would be more than plenty, it's really neck and neck to be honest.
I'd grab trials of one and then the other to get a feel for how both work out of the box/can work after customizing then pick.
For games records there is one good software named Gecata by Movavi (Game Recorder | Download Game Recording Software). Great choice to open youtube channel and it's not expensive, what is important.
Did you come from fuckin neptune to say this or what
