The announcement was met by fearful screams and tears. But, in reality, the passengers were safely cruising at 35,000 feet, somewhere between Miami and London, reports The Telegraph. "My wife was crying and passengers were screaming. Then they played an announcement telling us to just ignore the warnings," a passenger told the paper. The flight crew reassured passengers that the warning was played in error, but some think the response was not enough. Passengers Duncan and Tracey Farquharson told The Daily Mail that "staff issued a 'blase' apology and did not explain exactly what the error was until hours later, when they were landing at Heathrow." An airline spokesperson said the company apologizes for causing "undue concern." Apology letters were handed out to passengers upon landing. However, this isn't the first time such an incident happened on a British Airways flight. In August 2010, passengers on a London to Hong Kong fight were also mistakenly told to prepare for a crash into the sea.
No idea how these idiots had pilots licenses. They must have taken the short plane to flight school.
Sounds like some type of automated announcement. I would hardly blame the pilots for that.
I didn't think that sort of announcement would be automated. I guess it makes sense though, they probably have to state very specific things in the announcement. I wonder if they just have a button for all emergencies.
From what I understand of this (which is very little) is that the cabin crew have a system for playing announcements and could simply press the wrong button / enter the wrong code.
Wow, i would have still be terribly worried even when they said to ignore the warnings. How can you do such a mistake in the first place.
I wonder if they just have a button for all emergencies.
I've a feeling that it would simply be abused.

"you're all going to die. oops no wait lol our mistake"
I've a feeling that it would simply be abused.
"Ma'am, this water tastes a little strange." "Okay, just stay calm sir. LUCY! Hit the button." "Good afternoon ladies and gentleman, we seem to be having some issues. If you see any fires or snakes, hear any loud noises, or experience a loss of air, pressure, or life please try to stay calm. Thank you, and as always we hope you've enjoyed your flight on AIRLINE HERE."

They should have been out there the second it started playing telling everyone they fucked up
First thing I thought of was this, from Mallrats.
My cousin Walter jerked off in public once. True story. He was on a plane to New Mexico, when all of a sudden the hydraulics went. The plane started spinning around, going out of control. So he decides it's all over and whips it out and starts beating it right there. So all the other passengers take a cue from him and they start beating like mad. So all the passengers are beating off, plummeting to their certain doom... when all the sudden... the hydraulics kick back in and the plane rights itself. It lands safely. And everyone puts their pieces or whatever away and deboard. And nobody mentions the phenomenon to anyone else.
I'm flying to the US with British Airways in May. If we get told we're going to crash into the ocean I'll just chill out.
They should have been out there the second it started playing telling everyone they fucked up
They don't have a plane to fly or anything. Even if one did get up, you know that planes have like three sections because they're so long right? He'd have to shout over the commotion (a job the PA system could do better) and than proceed to do this for three classes.

They should start putting the in-flight safety instructions from Fight Club in all their planes.
The probably were. It was a mistake, they come over the load speaker and tell them it was a mistake and the air crew continues to relay this message to everyone who didn't hear it. I seriously doubt everyone on the plane was hiding from the passengers during this. The only fault is the fact the pilots themselves didn't address the issue again until they landed. We don't know why we did that. People are tying really hard to find fault in the pilots but it was an honest mistake and hardly a reason to start some investigation, they probably tapped the wrong button with their wrist.
