Anyone following the Apple Maps fiasco over the last week knows that there isn’t a lot that Apple Maps is doing better than the Google Maps app that preceded it on the iOS platform. But according to Turkish site Sosyalmedya and corroborated by The Verge, it seems that Apple is providing higher quality imagery than Google of certain sensitive places on the globe. Whether or not that is a good thing is up for debate.
Pictured above: Imrali Island, home to one of Turkey’s highest-security prisons. You can see that Google has overexposed its image, while Nokia has only provided a very grainy, zoomed-out view. In Apple’s imagery, individual buildings are clearly defined, prompting Sosyalmedya to accuse the app of jeopardizing national security. The Verge has checked up on several other internationally sensitive sites and there seems to be trend. Apple has the best imagery in all the places it’s not supposed to.

Now I can model my Prison Architect prison to Turkey's!

I don't know how Apple could think that it would be soooo easy to replicate Google Maps and just drop it completely.
This could be really useful for making ARMA maps, since you need to use satellite images to make them.
TBH google only does it after being asked to
however, if your previous mapping provider sets a precedent for "obscure xyz"
it would make sense to also obscure xyz

But they had to in order to improve the maps, TBT, and so on.
Google will be out with their own app, which will be much better than what Apple and Google could agree on.
So instead of one feature-less map app, we'll be having 2 great map apps in the future.
You can also see places like [del]Area 51[/del] on Apple's maps that Google has blocked.
EDIT: Apparently you can see it on Google Maps too. I thought it used to be blurred, but I must be thinking of some other base.

I was going to rate that useful, but I'm just paranoid enough to leave that one alone.

Turns out you could already see it. There are some places still blurred/blocked on Google Maps, but I'd need an iOS device to check them on Apple's maps.
quick someone rip all of the army bases etc out of apples maps before they take them down!
Did they do anything right?

and you wont go to prison for 20 years for espionage because it's apples fault!
To be fair, though, Google never asked me if they could take pictures of my house, the surrounding area, and attempt to log onto my wifi network.
Pictures of North Korean/Russian prison camps GO!

but they do obscure faces and therefore are alright in the eyes of the law
I never heard anything about tapping into wifis though, got any reading material on that?

Streetview trucks used to record wifi traffic in an area for location services based on available networks. My favorite part about this is that literally nobody would have noticed or cared if they didn't point it out.
How can such a blurry image affect National security, anyway? I was under the impression that if it was visible from the sky, it was (more or less) fair game.

Stuff like the layout of prisions and military bases, hell from some images you could see shit like APCs or missile silos
that's kind of one of the reasons no-fly zones exist

Even the White House is blurred (well, actually just photoshopped) on Google Maps. It has some equipment on its roof (not visible from the ground or nearby structures) that is kept secret for security reasons.
Oh shit, I hope they don't have pictures of Afghanistan, this shit is no joke.

It does, but nowhere as clear as what Google shows. Apple's maps look more like drawings from an old atlas, Google shows you cars on the street.

Holy shit I'm still amazed that we already got stuff like this within 10 years of creating googlemaps.
