Going Overboard Review (DO NOT READ IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW MOST OF THE STORY) Director: Valerie Breiman Cast: Adam Sandler - Schecky Moskowitz Scott LaRose - Dickie Diamond Tom Hodges - Bob/Schecky's Mother Burt Young - General Noriega Billy Zane - King Neptune Valerie Breiman made what could be one of the best overlooked comedies ever made. It is a comedy that I personally found to be funny to the point where I didn't laugh, but instead asked, “Is it so funny that I don't get it? Is it so funny that it's beyond my comprehension of funny?” This movie has to be one that will be analyzed for years on end because neither me or my friend watching this film with me laughed while watching it, once. We smiled, boy did we smile, but we didn't even chuckle. It was a unique experience, to say the least. A movie so hilarious that you can't laugh at it. Valerie is a genius, and I hope her next movie, Overnight, is going to be as much a classic as this. Adam Sandler did a great job as well, and I fail to see why this movie is so overlooked in his career. The film starts out with a shot of General Noriega's mug(played by Burt Young of Amityville II: The Possession fame), and already I'm wondering if this is supposed to be funny or not. He proceeds to name several pornographic movie titles as he sifts through a small stack of VHS pornos, when he stumbles across a movie titled The Unsinkable Schecky Moskowitz baring a contorted face made by Adam Sandler on the blue cover. He shows the cover for a while too, as though waiting for you to let the joke sink in, almost as if the film's saying, “Fuck you, this is too funny for you to understand” and then he plays it in a VCR which, instead of showing a clip from this film, switches to the opening credits, featuring Adam Sandler's drawn mug word-bubbling the credits in a puzzling manner. Me and my friend, Joe, looked at each other, and we knew this movie would go down as a classic in our books. That's how incredibly overwhelming this comedy is in the first THREE minutes! After the credits finish, several women--supposedly beauty pageant winners--are each shown individually in talking head shots, basically talking about how ugly Schecky is, though he's nice. I almost laughed, but the movie was already making it clear that, again, this is too funny for me. So, basically we get the picture, laid out for us by Adam “Fucking Genius” Sandler about how his character is trying to become a comedian on a cruise ship. So that's basically the plot. He wants to be a comedian... on a cruise ship. Sound like much of a plot? It isn't, but this movie pulls it off better than anything like it I've ever seen. Now, unlike the last film I reviewed, The Wicker Man (2006), I won't go into immense plot details. I'll let you enjoy the film when you first see it while outlining the basic plot points. But let's just say that Billy Zane plays one hell of a King Neptune. I almost believed the King himself was there, his characterization was that good. He basically advised Schecky at various points throughout the film about comedy techniques. As Adam masquerades on the boat envying the head comedian of the ship, Dickie Diamond-- Who gets all the women and booze he wants --comes up with hilarious jokes throughout the film. I didn't get any of them or see how they were funny, but that was because my friend and I had to think about them a few times. Then they were downright hilarious. Other comedians, including the main man Milton Berle(Have no idea who he is. Help me out here.) make absolutely riotous jokes as they mentor Schecky in the ways of comedy. Now, you won't find of the jokes funny at all, at first. These jokes make you think, “Why was that funny?” and then the more you think about them, you'll find yourself going from chuckling awkwardly to blatantly rolling with laughter. From left to right, Bob and Schecky. Tom Hodges plays a beautifully comedic role on par with the rest of the film in both portraying Schecky's friend Bob, who advises him frequently on things along with King Neptune, as well as portraying Schecky's mother in frequent flashbacks which, like the rest of the film, aren't funny at first, but warm up to you. Along with Bob is a sort of antagonist, but not really, Croaker (Played by Adam Rifkin, who plays Miss spain in the same film). He's a rock star who basically just looks strung out on heroin the entire time, pale as pure cocaine, and despite of this he gets women thrown at him ironically. It was one of the few funny things in this film that we first got when my friend and I watched it. Almost everything else was too genius to get the first time around. Lucky for me, I found this film in a bargain bin at Wal-Mart and can watch it whenever. As the film goes by so slowly, the wonderful tropical theme which is first heard in the opening credits is heard throughout the film almost constantly. It may seem annoying, but it grows on you. Oh yeah. I forgot to mention. Schecky and Bob are waiters. They aren't comedians. Well, Schecky wants to be one, but he's just the trusty dusty waiter with horrible joke telling skills. Until the end. Schecky and King Neptune Fart jokes are aplenty in this film, though they're not done without taste, even if they are frequently. Toilet humor is something this movie masters and masters well. I never laughed until I look back on it, and now the movie has me cracking up big time as I recall Dickie Diamond sitting next to Schecky at a bar and squeezing out a few mini gas clouds. Scott LaRose's comedic time is excellent when in a nightmare had by Schecky, he dons a speedo and says, “Hey, Schecky. You got an apple in your mouth,” as the camera shows Schecky with, of course, an apple in his mouth. I'm cracking up as I type this. By the end of the film, Schecky and Bob are good friends and Schecky discovers the key to good comedy, telling jokes that may seem old and dated, but since the audience in the film laughs at them I felt left out as I didn't laugh once. But now that I look back on them, they were pretty funny. Now, the thing is, the jokes aren't the main element. Of course, the main point is he wants to become a comedian, but it's solely about that, and not the jokes. Like the beginning of the film, Schecky talks to the camera and audience directly, narrating exactly what's happening and his confusion about what to do. Another part of the plot is that the captain of the ship, Noriega, wants Schecky killed by his two henchmen who are both eccentric and hilariously wild in their attempt at capturing and killing Schecky. However, Schecky charms them with his humor with the rest of the ship, and Noriega is left alone. What I also thought was funny was the hilarious use of the Miss America contestants in the talking head shots of them talking about their opinions of things Schecky is wondering, such as “What is heaven like?” and their answers are stupid, and again I find myself in a state of laughter as I think about it. As the film ended with Schecky becoming the boat comedian along with Bob getting the girl, I felt totally fulfilled, but a little unsure as to how comedic this movie was actually supposed to be. At times it felt like a drama. Then it would shift to moments of absolute hilarity. I became completely and utterly bewildered by the experience and I wouldn't be surprised if Adam Sandler still enjoys looking back at this debut film. 4.5/5 Oh and by the way, the film is free to watch on IMDb: http://www.imdb.com/video/hulu/vi3342794777/

You are reviewing a 1989 movie, in 2009?
You are reviewing a 1989 movie, in 2009?
It's a comedy classic. I had to.
I found this to be helpful and a undying well of knowledge from which I can drink everyday.
Fart jokes are never funny, what are you 10?
I'm not sure whether I just got trolled hard or not trolled at all.
It's actually just a really shitty movie.
Obviously no one who replied read my Wicker Man review several months back. Now that was a great movie. The remake, that is, not the stupid 1973 atrocity.
