Terrible at Math, Any Hope for Engineering degree?
46 replies, posted
MORNING Y'ALL.
I'm just ending my 1st semester in Gr. 11. My primary plan for the future is to join the Canadian Forces and go through RMC (Royal Military College) and attain a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I am creative, logical, good at planning and anylizations, but I'm bad at math.
When I was in grade 4 i was fuckin' sweet kickass holyshit omg icameinyoureyes good at math compared to the other kids. Am i just not trying hard enough, or is there hope for me yet?
I can't even do long division, but sometimes when I do math I will actually figure out the formuli on my own, as opposed to the math we have now a-days where it's "Ok class get out your calculators..".
So Mr/Mrs. FP, Do you think my inability to do math is just laziness? Or is there such a thing as someone "who just sucks with numbers" ?
follow your dreams and anything can happen!!!!!
No answers like that please, that's why G.W.B. became president.
I have literally the exact same life story but with the American Army

ok then nope you will fail dont even try
ERECTIN A DISPENSER!
Maybe you should TRY SOME MORE before you ask us.
Also, Never-NEVER- ask facepunch a question.
Incoming shitstorm.

Oh hey let's try to be useless and flame OP to feed agrees before I come out of my cave
rating whore creepin round here!
What grades are you getting? Many people claim they're bad at math when they're actually passable.
Plus this whole "bad at math" thing is just you not doing enough exericses.

With me I get F's. I don't know what it is but I doze off when the teacher is explaining. I don't have the issue in any other class, I have B's and A's in all my other classes.

well.. THE EAsiest way to agRee on this matter is to Laugh it off, You know. Try a bit harder befOre yOu get aLL angry.

Engineering is primarily math-oriented. While your specific field of engineering (that you're interested in) may not require a lot of math, getting a degree for it will. The majority of the prerequisites for engineering classes are math classes (usually somewhat advanced). I'd suggest getting a math tutor or some kind of help so you can be successful in your math courses, thus bringing you closer to your engineering degree. I wish you the best of luck in pursuing your dreams.
I get between B's and D's in all my classes. I'm sure I could do a lot better, but math, im actually bad at.

I'm the same way, and it really sucks because I'm in an accelerated math program. Sometimes I'll make Fs, other times I'll make a couple A+s, then I'll turn around and make 3 Ds. I have a 77% in there (Trigonometry).
buy a calculator

I got 90% better then other sophomores in my math PSAT.

Lol no you're not going to be an engineer sorry.

Pretty much that.
I mean, sure. A fat dude can some day be a Jeet Kune Do master, but he's gonna have to lose 150lbs before he can even start classes. And then he'll have to become totally ripped before becoming a master.
I mean, sure. A dumb dude can some day be an engineer, but he's gonna have to do well at all of his other classes before he can even more on to basic mathematics. And then he'll have to study and practice for 2-4 years before becoming an engineer.

You're probably not paying enough attention or you're not asking for help.
I can't even do long division, but sometimes when I do math I will actually figure out the formuli on my own, as opposed to the math we have now a-days where it's "Ok class get out your calculators..".
Can't even do long division? Though calculators can do all the work for you, it's a good idea to understand how long division works.
So Mr/Mrs. FP, Do you think my inability to do math is just laziness? Or is there such a thing as someone "who just sucks with numbers" ?
There's no such thing as a person who is terrible at numbers, only someone who doesn't know how to work with them. Practice what you don't get and ask for help from your teacher(s), peers, or your family if you need to.
Now get off your lazy ass and get good with math, I do hope you succeed in getting that engineering degree.
Depends on how bad you are at math. A lot of engineering is math, no getting around that, but you might have an easier time when it's math you can see. For instance compression and tension forces in a bridge structure, or how buoyant forces float a half-filled barrel upright rather than on its side, or basically all physics (physics is awesome). Other math is less easy to see, and for that you'll just have to buckle down and go over it again and again. Eventually it makes sense.
But if you really don't like math, then you'd just be miserable as an engineer. Look into something like industrial design.
no

believe in facepunch who believes in you
Sort of the same thing here, only I realized that I don't want to become an engineer, and rather I am going to use my Biomedical Degree to get into Medical School so I can become an Anaesthesiologist.

That post belongs in the TF2 section.
I mean it just exudes TF2.
It's not bad but I mean this entire forum isn't about TF2 man.
The reason I say no is that I myself am stopping at nothing to get a respectable engineering career with a serious salary. I am in every AP class offered, going into the highest level of calculus and physics my school offers, trying to get as close to perfect on the ACT (and SAT, and AP tests) as possible, and getting a 4.0 GPA while I'm at it. I'm not even sure a well-known university on the coast would take me and I sure as hell don't want to end up in my public state university.
Thing about it is though if your going to be using math in this job are you going to enjoy it?
Not a chance sorry.
I have the same issue however i am joining the australian army
First post sooooo here goes
Just keep practicing your math skills and you will achieve what you need to get into engineering.
My dad is a Rolls-Royce engineer, he has always struggled with maths throughout his life but he's always been willing to work hard. If you're prepared to come home at around 5pm and study until 3/4 in the morning then yes you can do it, if not you just don't have the dedication you need.
