Swedish police have detained a 31-year-old man in Ängelholm in western Sweden who was discovered after he sought advice from authorities on the legality of building a nuclear reactor in a domestic kitchen. The man, who explained that his interest in nuclear physics was awakened as a teenager, ordered some radioactive material from overseas and acquired more by taking apart a domestic fire alarm. Despite the man's frank and full disclosure of his experiment, his activities only came to the attention of the authorities a couple of weeks ago when he contacted the Swedish Radiation Authority (Strålsäkerhetsmyndigheten) to inquire if it was legal to construct a nuclear reactor at home. The man was told that somebody would be sent to measure the levels of radiation in his flat. "When they came they had the police with them. I have had a Geiger counter and have not detected a problem with radiation," the 31-year-old told the local Helsingborgs Dagblad (HD). The man was arrested by the police and taken in for questioning. He admitted to his plans and was later released. He told the newspaper that had he succeeded in building a nuclear reactor, generating any power would probably have proved beyond him. "To get it to generate electricity you would need a turbine and a generator and that is very difficult to build yourself," he told HD. The man is reported to have spent around 6,000 kronor ($950) on his project and after all his equipment was seized in the raid, he has confirmed that in the future he intends to focus on the "theoretical" aspects of nuclear physics.
Source: http://www.thelocal.se/35306/20110802/ Prolly thought he was Tony Stark.
Didn't a guy in Texas do the same thing years ago?
how
I was just about to ask if Tony Stark had anything to do with this.
Didn't a guy in Texas do the same thing years ago?
Well, it was tried in Michigan nearly two decades ago but wasn't successful
'Ass attack' downs Swedish model's blog (1 Aug 11)
What?

I love how he tried to use Americium from a smoke alarm Fyi, the amount of radioactivity within is measured in microcuries - just over the amount of radioisotope that humans have in their body. Despite being an alpha emitter it's unlikely ingesting it could kill you, let alone run a nuclear reactor. It's like trying to power a generator by burning the dust in the air.
He probably wouldn't manage to do anything other that give people radiation poisoning if he was trying to use americium, I don't think there's a single isotope of it known to be fissile.
Really he shoulda been offered a job. Guy's just trying to help ease the stress on the local power grid with some DIY work!
The fact that he spent $950 is pretty incredible

Remember my nuclear reactor thread?
Remember my nuclear reactor thread?
Nope
It's Mr. T
Remember my nuclear reactor thread?
You could double your age and you wouldn't be as old as this guy.
You could double your age and you wouldn't be as old as this guy.
He could double his age and he wouldn't be in high school.
Remember my nuclear reactor thread?
Weren't you the kid who tried to start up several projects and miserably failed?
It's Mr. T
I have a mental image of the real Mr. T making a reactor in his kitchen in a montage with The A-Team theme playing.
Didn't a guy in Texas do the same thing years ago?
Instantly made me think of Big bang Theory.
Somehow the title for this thread is just enough. Nothing else is needed. This is hilarious.
Reminds me of the idea guy here on facepunch.
It's like trying to power a generator by burning the dust in the air.
Bro I just had an idea
Hilarious. I'm building my own reactor right now. However, due to not being able to obtain the gas I'd like to use (deuterium) from where I am, measurable fusion won't be achievable. My reactor is fully capable of nuclear fusion but currently sits as a demonstration inertial electrostatic confinement (IEC) reactor (or, as some of you may know, the Farnsworth Fusor). I do plan to get an advisor from my university so that the project can be taken over by more capable hands when it comes to measurable fusion.
I thought Mr.T as soon as I saw the title.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
That is actually quite awesome.
