Cantor Says Congress Won’t Pay For Missouri Disaster Relief Unless Spending Is Cut

Rescue workers worked through more storms in an effort to find potential survivors, even as the death toll rose to at least 119. President Obama pledged full support to the state Monday, telling survivors, “We’re here with you. We’re going to stay by you.” House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), however, said that before Congress approved federal funds for disaster relief, it had to offset the spending with cuts to other programs. The Washington Times reports:
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said Monday that if Congress passes an emergency spending bill to help Missouri’s tornado victims, the extra money will have to be cut from somewhere else.
“If there is support for a supplemental, it would be accompanied by support for having pay-fors to that supplemental,” Mr. Cantor, Virginia Republican, told reporters at the Capitol. The term “pay-fors” is used by lawmakers to signal cuts or tax increases used to pay for new spending.
In 2005, Republicans criticized then-House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) for his willingness to fund relief in the wake of Hurricane Katrina by adding to the deficit. “It is right to borrow to pay for it,” he said at the time, explaining that cuts could “attack” the economy.
Meanwhile, as Climate Progress reports, the government’s tornado forecasting service faces cuts in the GOP Congress, including cuts to NOAA weather satellite that “could halve the accuracy of precipitation forecasts.” Accurate and early forecasting is tremendously important, as “tornado deaths in the United States have gone from 8 per 1 million people in 1925 to 0.11 per 1 million people today — a trend largely attributed to early-warning systems fed by advanced meteorology and the introduction of Doppler radar.”

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said Monday that if Congress passes an emergency spending bill to help Missouri's tornado victims, the extra money will have to be cut from somewhere else.
"If there is support for a supplemental, it would be accompanied by support for having pay-fors to that supplemental," Mr. Cantor, Virginia Republican, told reporters at the Capitol. The term "pay-fors" is used by lawmakers to signal cuts or tax increases used to pay for new spending.
That stands in stark contrast to then-House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, who six years ago stumbled when, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, he said emergency spending would be tacked on to the deficit.
At the time, Mr. DeLay said the GOP, which had controlled Congress for most of the preceding decade, had whittled the federal budget down so well that there wasn't room to cut enough to pay for the billions in hurricane-related spending.
"It is right to borrow to pay for it," he said, adding that cuts could "attack the very economy" that Republicans were trying to bolster.
He took flak from conservatives who said after years of expanding budgets under President George W. Bush, Republicans in Congress should have turned to cuts before deficit-spending.
About 122 dead... Many more homeless... and your top priority IS MAKING THE RICH RICHER?!

this is hardly the time to be partisan goddamn
this is hardly the time to be partisan goddamn
Rate me dumb, but this is becoming less of an issue of left vs right, and more of a good vs evil issue. Why would Cantor and the Republicans turn their backs on those in such desperate need? Call it partisan all you want, but saying "Cut spending to social programs and the like, THEN we'll give aid to the victims of the tornado." is BEYOND monstrous...
We should take Representative Cantor...
and throw him into the next tornado!
Seriously, why don't we do what he says, and include 'pay-fors'.
In the form of closing tax loopholes for the rich and/or increasing their taxes. And/or severely cutting defense. :smug:

i agree entirely. holding the well being of disaster victims hostage to try and push your party objectives is despicable.
I hope he gets canned for this.
Why don't they use the money they would get otherwise of the rich tax brakes and use that for those people?
(And more, i doubt it will be enough.)
Get Jon Stewart on the case!
Can we stop saying that republicans and democrats are equally stupid/bad now? I mean everyone knew what the little letter beside his name was going to be before even reading the OP.
He's been having lessons from the IMF.
I'm honestly convinced the GOP is comprised of people with no souls.

They're just very selfish, while ranting about the young generations being the same.
I am actually kind of for the cuts. Sadly, McAsshole Cantor decided that the only way to get them was by not helping the country that he is currently living in and governing.
Mwa ha ha ha ha!!!
