The PSNI posted the warning on its own Facebook page
The police have warned Facebook users posting offensive messages about the deaths of two children in west Belfast that they may face prosecution.
Ciara Doherty, 11, and 13-year-old Martin Rooney took their own lives in the past two weeks.
Using its own Facebook page, the PSNI said it was taking the "grossly offensive" messages seriously and would work to identify those responsible.
It said they could be prosecuted under the Telecommunications Act.
Freedom of speech means nothing apparently.
I'm for freedom of speech and all, but stuff like this can be an exception in my opinion.

then you're not for freedom of speech

Who said Ireland had absolute freedom of speech?
Most places don't, not even America does.

I never said it did. But I've never heard of someone being prosecuted due to "cyber-bullying" (which is what this sounds like).
Protip: If people are saying mean things to you over the computer, don't read what they type.

Also, this is in the U.K. right? Not the Republic of Ireland.
Say what you want but you're not allowed to type it
Harassment by computer is a crime in several U.S. states.
Harassment by computer statutes are typically distinct from cyberbullying laws, in that the former usually relate to a person's "use a computer or computer network to communicate obscene, vulgar, profane, lewd, lascivious, or indecent language, or make any suggestion or proposal of an obscene nature, or threaten any illegal or immoral act," while the latter need not involve anything of a sexual nature.
It is actually a criminal offense in some states.
I can understand this, after all being a huge dick to a grieving family isn't the brightest of ideas. Hopefully they don't go around flinging court summons at everyone who posts anything negative.

Pretty sure harassing a dead person is not cyber bulling them. Whether they're alive or dead makes a difference.
If that was the case, the Westboro picketers would have been locked up a long time ago, especially since they even do it during the funerals (far away from them but still close by).

Then it's not freedom of speech. You can't just pick and choose what you feel is unpleasant to hear about and make it illegal.
Then it's not freedom of speech. You can't just pick and choose what you feel is unpleasant to hear about and make it illegal.
What I think they're trying to go for here are trolls who are just out to make the family's life as horrible as possible, they aren't trying to go for freedom of speech (that'd be like charging people who just made a comment about who killed him).
Maybe I'm just talking gibberish, I'm rather tired

Who's to say what other people are allowed to talk about?
Then it's not freedom of speech. You can't just pick and choose what you feel is unpleasant to hear about and make it illegal.
It has already been established that "freedom of speech" doesn't exist and that different jurisdictions (even within in the US) draw the lines in the different places
Who's to say what other people are allowed to talk about?
Government I guess
Your government tells you that you aren't allowed to harass or slander someone, you can't lie in court either, so you really don't have any more freedom of speech than other people do
not even America does.
Not anymore. We're a Socialist state like most of the world now.

Look out for communist nazi Obama and his socialist Obamacare!
Good thing they're Irish police and don't have jurisdiction over Texas.

He also is 100% for gun control, which is unconstitutional, at least in the manor he's proposing.

Okay that had nothing to do with freedom of speech AND it's an editorial that means nothing
The constitutionality of things is for the supreme court to decide, not some blogger
He also is 100% for gun control, which is unconstitutional.
Is that why he, overall, has eased gun control laws? (Allowing them in parks)

That's not a random ad. It's there since it's a copy pasta from JihadWatch.
That's worse then linking to an opinion article on Obama from Fox.
