The next next-gen operating system will reportedly be built to function across all of Microsoft‘s platforms, including PCs, tablets, phones and, notably, whatever the next Xbox turns out to be, This Is Next reports via an unnamed source. The next OS will supposedly launch sometime in the next four years, which lines up with the expected 2014-or-later arrival of the next-generation Xbox. The move would also vibe with comments made at Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference earlier this week, where Windows Phone division president Andy Lees said that the company is looking to create “a single ecosystem” for its products. The aim, as he put it, is to provide “coherence and consistency [between platforms]… particularly with Xbox.” Perhaps even more notable is word from those same sources that Microsoft is weighing the value of losing the “Windows” brand name when this “single ecosystem” operating platform launches. Obviously none of this information should be taken as definite or even accurate, but it would undeniably be a logical next step to take. Plans are already in place for the Xbox 360 to play nice with Windows 8. Moving onto the next version of both OS and console, it’s reasonable to speculate even now that the level of integration will only increase. The possible brand switch is far more interesting from an industry perspective. The “Windows” name has been around since 1985. 2015 makes 30 years then, which is a nice round number to put the brand to rest on.[/release] I would not be surprised if this was a load of bullshit but hey lets see where this goes.
And as someone in that thread pointed out. This is coming from a relatively unknown source, with an "anonymous" (read: non-existent) source. Windows won't die out until the market share drops, the Windows name will be used until that happens. The most I can see "dying" in Windows is the way we use it, for example the new Metro based tablet UI is a big change for a primarily desktop oriented OS.
Deja Vu.
No chance this is true. Ballmer is too obsessed with the Windows name to throw it away.
Didn't they say the EXACT same thing about Windows 7? Or am I just getting Deja vu like Panda
Why would they do that? Windows is a universally known product.
They are only taking xbox live to a whole new level, a system independent community and a system software/games sharing(buying) platform. Integrating it in windows (by default this time). They are gone take cross-platform compatiblity to a whole new level starting with windows tablets. This doesn't mean the end of windows far from instead.
I'd imagine it'd be more logical to change their game platform than to change the name of their incredibly popular and universally known program. (I'm saying to make the next Xbox to use a form of Windows instead of changing Windows)
Why should they they? are earning millons.
Isn't there a megathread?
The next name should be Doors.
The next name should be Doors.
I prefer Gates a lot more.
Archway sounds kinda cool
Lol, Hub and then they can all be Kinected
Archway sounds kinda cool
How about Windows Platinum?
Microsoft might re-brand its operating system after Windows 8 with something more suited to the company's aims for total cross-platform integration.
Why not just do everything on the PC platform? Loads of people play WoW and LoL, why not just encourage PC gaming for once?
Why not just do everything on the PC platform? Loads of people play WoW and LoL, why not just encourage PC gaming for once?
But then what would happen to Xbox?
Why not just do everything on the PC platform? Loads of people play WoW and LoL, why not just encourage PC gaming for once?
Because $$$.
Why not just do everything on the PC platform? Loads of people play WoW and LoL, why not just encourage PC gaming for once?
Microsoft is a business. What do you expect? Anyways, cross-platform integration is attractive to consumers, and would more-than-likely boost PC related sales while not having any negative effects on console related sales. Honestly, I don't blame them. Microsoft probably gets tenfold the amount of revenue from Xbox 360 related sales compared to PC gaming related sales, if not more. Us PC gamers (a minority) want Microsoft to give us attention, but as I said: Microsoft is a business, we shouldn't expect mercy.
It makes sense, after all, Apple did it first, so, naturally MS is behind and copying there ideas. ^_^ In all seriousness though, it is wise to have multi-platform integration and a contiguous look and feel to operating environment. By that I mean, devices that operate in a similar nature as to define an identity and brand for the company and a much more refined user experience. I am by no means an Apple fan boy, but, Apple has successfully done this through its Mac OS and iphone, ipad and ipod. If you can use one, you can use them all. So, really I think it's to try and compete on that level with Apple. Microsoft, since it's inception, has always lacked in this department (in my opinion) and it's shown most notably on it's devices such as zune and numerous smart phones tablets, etc. over the years.
Mac OSX boggles me, and I find iOS easy. I don't think you can say it that way, though they have made a good ecosystem.
I think MS's big challenge is managing the different input methods. It's been all about mouse/keyboard for Windows. Now they will try to coordinate mouse/keyboard, touch screen small(phone), touch screen large(tablet), plus game console controller(360). That doesn't even include Kinect. Apple has the advantage of controlling hardware and software.
GOD Windows 8 looks awful Where did the classic desktop go?
Behind the new UI, you can use it when you want to.
Phew...
Either way, you haven't tried it yet, don't judge it, really.
Either way, you haven't tried it yet, don't judge it, really.
Well, as there seemingly lacks pictures of the desktop itself, i thought it didn't have one
Well, as there seemingly lacks pictures of the desktop itself, i thought it didn't have one
It's been shown over and over again really, don't know how you've missed it.
