But heavy use of immunosuppressant drugs weakened her and she succumbed to cancer in April at the age of 49, the BBC's Hugh Schofield in Paris says.

After taking an overdose of sleeping pills, she awoke lying beside a pool of blood, with her pet Labrador at her side. The dog had apparently found her unconscious, and desperate to rouse her, had gnawed away at her face. The injuries to her mouth, nose and chin were so extreme that doctors ruled out a routine face reconstruction. Instead they proposed a ground-breaking face transplant.

by her pet dog.
Oh my god.
The dog had apparently found her unconscious, and desperate to rouse her, had gnawed away at her face.
Oh my god.
After taking an overdose of sleeping pills
Jesus Christ. I don't even know what to say about this shit. This just seems like a serious case of unfortunate events all lined up, all events that could have been narrowly avoided with regular old run of the mill logic. Immunosuppressants are really terrible drugs. Pretty much a death sentence if you've got to take them for a prolonged period of time.
It sucks that she died, and that she had to go through this - but that a successful face transplant was possible is fantastic. She's the first of many (I hope) to get a face transplant, and she died forwarding medicine.
Where did the donor face come from?
Where did the donor face come from?
They never disclose that for some reason. It would be interesting to know to be honest.

I mean sure the drugs certainly wouldnt help, but surviving cancer is a dice throw at best regardless

Is..is that a normal response for dogs? Will they end up chewing your face off if you don't wake up?
Is..is that a normal response for dogs? Will they end up chewing your face off if you don't wake up?
Yeah I don't buy that. I think this dog might have been a pretty big dog and was just acting on instinct and saw what it thought was a another dead "animal" and started to eat.
