The head of the Northern Territory Labor Party has left Australia intending on joining Kurdish fighters in the battle against Islamic State militants in Syria, the ABC has confirmed.
Matthew Gardiner was also the secretary of hospitality, childcare and emergency services union United Voice in the NT, as well as the treasurer of peak body Unions NT.
The 43-year-old served as Australian Army combat engineer in Somalia in the early 1990s.
The ABC understands Mr Gardiner was able to leave the country because he was not on any watch list.

Lets hope nothing bad happens to him.
I am pretty sure ISIS would love to make another episode of "give us ten bazillions dollars or we are cutting your guy's head off" with him.
let's see if ASIO puts him on a watchlist now just because "ISIS", yet is joining the Kurds. Good luck to him
It's interesting how the Syrian Civil War is comparable in a lot of ways to the Spanish Civil War of the 30's.
Thought that he's retarded for doing it but then read this

He would atleast have combat experience
This will compromise him and make him an ISIS target for beheading

Suddenly, everyone is on a watch list.

At least he knows his shit.
He can always go as a role of an adviser.
I still think it's kind of a selfish thing to do. He does much more good being a leader back home paying his taxes and voicing his opinion than potentially getting killed as a martyr in a foreign country.
