• Gawker created a bot to trick Donald Trump into retweeting Mussolini
In November of 2015, Gawker’s Ashley Feinberg created a Twitter bot that posted quotes from the writings and speeches of Benito Mussolini, the Italian dictator who created the Facist party. The bot’s tweets were Mussolini quotes attributed to Donald Trump, the thinking being: this guy will retweet anything as long as it sounds like praise for, well, himself. It certainly doesn’t hurt that Trump has had nearly three decades of media exposure and may not have written his own best selling book: “The Art of the Deal.” After all, who can keep track of everything they’ve said in a 30+ year career? After months of tweeting Benito Mussolini quotes falsely attributed to Donald Trump, today Trump finally took the bait.
https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/703900742961270784 http://thenextweb.com/shareables/2016/02/28/gawker-created-a-bot-to-trick-donald-trump-into-retweeting-mussolini/#gref
It is better to live one day as a lion than 100 years as a sheep
Clearly, Trump truly is a fascist.
Is it bad that 90% of these quotes from the bot are things I can actually see Trump saying. Mind you, they have nothing to do with fascism.
Okay, he retweeted something somewhat reasonable that happened to be said by a known fascist. So?
I get that everybody loves the whole Trump = Nazi but this is just desperate The quote isn't even that bad, I can see anybody saying it
"Words build bridges into unexplored regions." Can you agree with this statement? Yes? Well then good news you're instantly a racist delusional sociopath because that quote was from Hitler you fucking fascist.
I don't see the point of this. If it's supposed to paint Trump in a negative light, I'm not buying it. This is clearly entrapment and the quote isn't even that bad.
Gawker's gotta stay relevant somehow I guess.
Each day Gawker survives I lose a bit of hope in the humanity
just because mussolini was a bit of a dick doesn't mean he wasn't an intelligent and eloquent guy. plenty of terrible people have said smart and agreeable things
The fact these quotes come from people like Mussolini and Hitler isn't what's bad. They're good quotes actually, and they make good points (both men made a lot of sensible statements privately actually; Mussolini for instance refused to believe in the existence of races as Hitler and the Nazis did). What's bad is that this fucker is so clueless and unoriginal he takes them and uses them with no regard to where they come from, and it's clear he's just retweeting them because they sound good. That's basically what Fascism is about: it's the art of illusion. It's about saying things that sound good, dressing things up in pageantry and theatricality, and so on... but they're completely without any greater depth to them and fall apart under closer examination. Looks mean more than substance.
you're thinking way too hard about this.
No, I'm really not. This is pretty simple: Trump's a guy who likes things that look good and sound good. He has no depth to him whatsoever. Look at what his entire campaign slogan revolves around: "Make America Great Again". What the fuck does that even mean? This isn't hard and this isn't complex. This is how it is. Unless you're stupid, which I'm willing to give people the benefit of a doubt on here, it's pretty easy to see how his campaign revolves around superficiality, and he likes these quotes because they're exactly that: superficial. They sound good, but they mean nothing.
It's a simple retweet, not him adopting a statement as a presidential policy
Did I say he was adopting them as presidential policy? No, I did not. Read, thank you.
The Autobahn was a great idea.
Am I a Nazi?
No, I'm really not. This is pretty simple: Trump's a guy who likes things that look good and sound good. Politicians since forever have used the mythical "golden past" to win support.

Anybody can deal with victory, only the mighty can bear defeat, and that's why Trump is the best candidate

Quoting lines from people in the past isn't anything new
The quote isn't even that bad, I can see anybody saying it
Mussolini was right!
People calling Donald Trump and his supporters Nazis are just acting in bad taste. Does Trump have a paramilitary force that silences the opposition and beats up minorities? Calling him a Nazi is just being stupid.
Thing is though, what makes Trump so amazing is that even if he loses, he'll take it gracefully. Anybody can deal with victory, only the mighty can bear defeat, and that's why Trump is the best candidate
-Adolf Hitler I'll give the man credit where he deserves it: he knows how to manipulate a significant number of people in this country. He can spoonfeed them bullshit, and they'll eat it up without hesitation. Because they don't think. What good fortune for him.
Dude. Thats not facism. Politicians since forever have used the mythical "golden past" to win support.
...again, read. I didn't say it was Fascism: I pointed out, correctly, that it is an extremely prominent element of Fascism. Mussolini wanted to restore the Roman Empire and return Italy to its ancient greatness, Hitler wanted to establish the age-old ideal of a Greater Germanic Reich that would expand eastward (like the Teutonic Knights in the Middle Ages did and as had been proposed since the 19th century; Drang nach Osten was not a new concept) and would adopt architecture and religious practices invoking the ancient past but at the same time striving for an artistic future, etc. Throughout it all, it was about pageantry, theatricality, and bullshit; things that sounded good and looked good, but that meant nothing. That's politics in general, but that's especially true of the politics of Fascism. I've called Trump out for what he is before: a xenophobic assclown of a human being who is full of lies and is just in the game for personal enrichment. I don't think he's a Fascist, but to deny that there are strong comparisons which can be made is ridiculous. I think Gawker did this to do nothing more than prove he's an unoriginal idiot who, while he knows how to manipulate people, has no ability to govern or to think for himself underneath it all and would make for a horrible president.
I guess Gawker is desperate to cling on to any shreds of relevance before Hulkamania is going to run wild on them later this year in the courts.
What I found funny is that trump retweeted something from an account called "IlDuce2016"...
I guess Gawker is desperate to cling on to any shreds of relevance before Hulkamania is going to run wild on them later this year in the courts.
This couldn't come sooner.
While Trump can be forgiven retweeting something pretty innocent, the profile picture is pretty obvious: Or is it hard to see avatars in a twitter client? I've basically never used twitter.

Ahh yes, but can Trump make the trains run on time?
Some dictator said a pretty normal thing, and someone agreed with it? Holy shit, look at that guy! He's clearly a fascist/communist/whatever that dictator was. Makes sense.
While Trump can be forgiven retweeting something pretty innocent, the profile picture is pretty obvious
The bot is literally called "Il Duce". The quote itself is not inherently fascist, but it sounds like something a comic book villain would say. Dictators were a pretty melodramatic sort.
"I have to go take a wizz back in a sec m8" -Adolf Hitler [editline]29th February 2016[/editline] This is "dictators saying day to day phrases", right?
