Today marks the 30th anniversary of the release of the Nintendo Famicom in Japan, the same console that would then become massively popular in the west under the name Nintendo Entertainment System or NES for short.
On the occasion of this historical birthday, during an interview with the Japanese newspaper Nikkei Shinbun Nintendo’s honcho Satoru Iwata expressed confidence in the future, strong of the company’s past:
Coming from thirty years in the home console business, I don’t think we’re suffering.
We’ll have to see if Iwata-san is right about this, especially in light of the upcoming big releases on the Wii U starting with Pikmin 3. Of course the 3DS continues to print money, so there’s no problem in that area, but the word on the street is that achieving the previously announced 100 billion Yen operating income target for this fiscal year will be difficult.
Honestly I think he might be right too, they were able to completely turn around the disastrous launch of the 3DS and were able to recuperate from the Virtual Boy in the 90s. Regardless of the fate of the Wii U, I doubt Nintendo is going anywhere soon.
Nintendo can last something like 30-50 years just on the money they current have alone.
Plus, I think the Wii U sales are going to pick up tremendously once they start getting the games out, just like the 3DS.
If need be they could always go back to the love hotels :v:
people who say the wii u is failing underestimate what lengths nintendo fans go to when a new zelda or SMMMMMMASH bros comes out.

Have to say, Smash bros is one of the things that has me really tempted to buy a wii u, along with a few other games.

Don't forget the next Mario Kart. The lowest seller in the series (of the numbers that I could find) was Double Dash.
It sold 4 million copies.
I am curious if Pikmin 3 which just came out in Japan and will be coming out everywhere else within 2-3 weeks, will move any systems.
They would be dumb not to make a bundled version for it.
It needs a price drop. It won't compete with the other consoles graphically because the Wii U is at or below PS3 level, so you can elimenate the dudebro call of duty players. While you will get some Nintendo Fans, there's some nintendo fans who don't get much money and there's plenty of cheap shit on the wii to play, so I can't get a Wii U. And Casual Gamers aren't going to pay 350 for a console they will only use for Netflix (which you can do for like 80$ now a days) and the occasional game of Mario Party.

Nintendoland alone will not sell this console.
Wasn't the Wii kinda underwhelming at release, but then ended up outselling the other consoles? Feel like that's what is going to happen here.

actually its far above what the ps3 can do but will take developers understanding how to not bottleneck the fuck out of it since its a gpgpu based system.

yes, bc nintendo realizes more than sony or ms what sells. and the wii u has nailed it with motion control. the controller is perfect tbh
no-one i know owns one because theres like 2 games for it which are worth playing. ill keep an eye out on it though

Only really out sold other consoles is because Nintendo have such a strong firm grip in Japan, being rather popular there as everyone should know. If you cut out the Japan sales you'll see 360 won over the Wii and PS3, 360 didnt sell that well in Japan I believe, unsure on the PS3.

According to VGCharts, Wii still outsold 360 by 10 million if you exclude Japan, where the 360 did fucking terrible. PS3 beat out the 360 everywhere except NA, where it got trounced pretty good.

I'd get a Wii U but I have a $800 PC.

I don't get the hate for double dash. It was really fun for me, and was refreshingly different.

Man, I wasted such UNGODLY amounts of time on that over at a friend's house on friday night. If it wasn't Smash Bros. Melee, it was Double Dash.

i still firmly believe that the Gamecube was the best console of that generation
i still firmly believe that the Gamecube was the best console of that generation
the games are what made the system so awesome. I mean for god's sake, Smash Bros Melee STILL has a competitive scene 13 or so years later on.
not to mention the first person titles that were on that beauty
Agent Under Fire, Nightfire, and Metroid Prime were all fantastic
also RE4 was exclusive to us for a while which was nice, and it proved that the Gamecube was one of the most graphically beefy consoles of that generation, as the PS2 version that came out a little later was noticeably shittier looking
i still firmly believe that the Gamecube was the best console of that generation
As much as I love the GameCube, PS2 firmly beats it. That said, GameCube would easily win in any other generation besides fourth (Super NES).
i dont even know how you think ps2 beats it out in any way other than sheer volume of titles
the ps2 was technically a better console but the gamecube had more swag
the gamecube overpowered the ps2 though
[editline]16th July 2013[/editline]
also nintendo really struck gold with the gc's controller
oh man was it PERFECT
i dont even know how you think ps2 beats it out in any way other than sheer volume of titles
Sorry but I'm sure they were still making and selling PS2's due to its popularity, untill last christmas when they stopped. Not sure how well the gamecube did on that front
the ps2 was technically a better console but the gamecube had more swag
actually i did some research and the gamecube apparently owned the ps2 in terms of hardware
and still more swag
GC was definitely a lot better for multiplayer games, but i think they were fairly equal in terms of exclusives
if you were playing with more than 2 people gamecube was the best console
I still play gc games now with my friends

Now how many of those games aren't tie-ins/ports of games being released on the PS3 or sports games
[editline]16th July 2013[/editline]
I mean the point here is that the Gamecube was the strongest console of that generation and it was swaggy as fuck
