Google is being sued by PayPal, which claims that the internet search giant stole its technology for turning smartphones into digital wallets.
PayPal alleges that Google obtained trade secrets from Osama Bedier, a former PayPal executive who is now Google's vice president of payments.
The lawsuit came hours after Google unveiled its plans to allow people to pay for shopping with their mobiles.
Google said it had not yet seen the complaint.
"We have not yet received a copy of the complaint and won't be able to comment until we've had a chance to review it," a Google spokesperson said.
Google intends to launch its mobile wallet technology in the US in the summer.
It plans to offer the service on mobile phones that use its Android operating system.
Payment processor PayPal, which is owned by online auction site eBay, also claims in its lawsuit that Mr Bedier was in job talks with Google at the same time as he was leading negotiations to make PayPal a payment option on Android.
The technology that allows mobile phone users to pay with their handsets in shops is called near field communications or NFC.
It is already used in Japan, and is predicted to become popular around the world.
PayPal says it spent three years trying to secure a deal under which it would create an NFC system for Android, only for Google to end the talks.
In its court filing, PayPal said: "By hiring Bedier, with his trade secret knowledge of PayPal's plans and understanding of Google's weaknesses as viewed by the industry leader, Google bought the most comprehensive and sophisticated critique of its own problems available."
"Google put Bedier in charge of its mobile payment business, virtually ensuring that Bedier would misappropriate PayPal's trade secrets concerning planning and competitive assessments in mobile payment."
Mr Bedier was hired by Google in January of this year.
For once, I actually hope that Google emerges victorious out of this one. I'm so tired of the shit that PayPal loves to throw around, it'd be nice if someone threw it back at them.
PayPal is so annoying. They love to fuck people over, especially independent developers who suddenly get a lot of money when people start buying their games. Not to mention how they can basically take your money.

If you have one of those gift cards that are basically debit cards, they take $1 away from your account every time you try to purchase something, and if you haven't called the credit card company and requested to fill in your information, they'll keep the dollar anyways. I had $5 left on a card, and I wanted one of those dealsXtreme bluetooth dongles for $2, I kept on thinking I entered info wrong, looked at the remaining amount online, saw they took 5 $1 charges from my card.
I never got that bluetooth dongle.
I really hope Google wins this.
you do know there's a BBC news node right
and it posted this article.
I absolutely hate Paypal. As a merchant, they have caused nothing but trouble and headache to me ranging from locking my accounts with several tens of thousands of dollars in them to "assisting" scammers completing their fraudulent purchases.
I honestly hoped Google Checkout and their other financial services can outrun Paypal, but they don't see to me too sucessful as Paypal is the pioneer and google joined the game a bit too late.

That's why you only put as much money as you need on your PayPal account. But the real problems are for those who are getting paid, as you stated.
I set up my paypal account a few years ago under the name John Smith then never used it. A few months ago I tried to change the name on my account so I didn't have to make a new one. Even after explaining that I put the wrong name in because I didn't want to put my real name on it at the time, they still refused to change my information unless I provide a legal document proving that I've changed my name from John Smith to my real name.
Osama Bedier's LinkedIn states that he didn't have any real off period between employment at PayPal and employment at Google. Should be having senior employees sign non-compete clauses, then they'd have a real reason to sue. They're prohibited for the most part in Cali but I think he'd be one of the special exceptions.
Oh, whoop, wrong on that. Odd. You'd think the land of the tech companies would have a trade secrets/tech exception.
Paypal are crap, using them for anything larger than a small transaction and bang your money is no longer in your control.

Well duh, your bank account won't allow you to change your name so easily either.
Paypal is not a community forum, it's a business that deals with money.
I had to make a new account to put new name. The problem was that my birth date glitched and was set to 1911, I emailed paypal and they said to re-check my info. I did, it still says 1911, so I emailed them again. Never did they reply.
I thought Google Checkout was even worse than PayPal

It's funny because they went to Google Checkout because Paypal closed their account.
We should just get rid of money as a society.

We're not in a position to move to a post scarcity economy yet.

A country being successful without some kind of currency is pretty much impossible when you think about it. Mostly just due to greedy human nature.
It's funny because they went to Google Checkout because Paypal closed their account.
No they don't.
After Paypal permanently limits our accounts, we would find ways to get back onto Paypal by creating is what is called as "stealth accounts". I can speak this behalf of most merchants that sells on eBay, we absolutely hate eBay and Paypal and yet we have no choice but to deal with it. There simply are no better alternatives that will bring a massive amount of traffic towards your sale from day one than eBay, who no longer supports 3rd party checkout services such as Google Checkout.
You might be thinking "hey, I sell my personal belongings on ebay all the time, they've never given me any problems", but trust me, once you start to make multiple four figures or more in short amount of time, regardless of what you are selling, they will start to haunt you.
Why isn't PayPal considered a bank yet? They need to be regulated like one.
Hang PayPal
They embezzle more money than Bernie Maddoff

They are in other countries, not in America.

Because they simply are not a bank, and banks certainly don't arbitrarily hold money just wanting to verify private information such as your product suppliers when you are selling rapidly.
What the hell is Paypal classified as, anyways?

I love how like, 3 years ago they charged me 42 dollars because I accidentally tried to withdrawal 10 cents more than I had from my bank account.
