The executive producer of Top Gear has expressed regret for a "light-hearted" remark on its Burma special that led to the BBC show being accused of racism.
Broadcast in March, the show saw Jeremy Clarkson use the word "slope" as an Asian man crossed a newly built bridge over the River Kwai in Thailand.
Executive producer Andy Wilman said it had been a "joke referencing both the build quality of the bridge and the local Asian man who was crossing it".
[...]
"We were not aware at the time, and it has subsequently been brought to our attention, that the word 'slope' is considered by some to be offensive," Wilman said in a statement.
While its not the end of the world with the joke, its funny how most people automatically jumped to Clarkson's defense "He'd never say such a thing!". When he clearly would, and did.
And it was funny
Yeah that's great an all but most people here didn't care if he was actually referring to asians or not and just thought that the whole controversy or whatever is dumb.
What a shock that Clarkson's racist, that'd almost be as shocking as saying he's a prick.
Who cares, it was a posed as a non-racist joke. I bet it was liberal illiterate, anti-white folk who considered it racist, i bet Thailand Asians didn't give a shit about this.
Am I blind or does the article not say that Clarkson admitted to referring to the asian guy? It's the producer apologizing about not knowing that slope is a racial slur in some places, nowhere is Clarkson being quoted directly
Looked into the term slope further, it's apparently an uncommon offensive "american-english" term for Asians that's never used anymore. I and i bet many British\english speaking people never even heard of this term until it was pointed out. Clarkson is not a Yank.
Andy Wilman admits he was referring to the Asian man as a 'slope' - and regrets joke.
Clarkson said nothing in the article.
I didn't even know slope was offensive to anyone. Do you think Egyptians would be angry if we called them pyramids or triangles?

some people on facepunch have openly liked to maintain that blackfacing isn't offensive to anyone
ignorance is not a defense
and what are you even talking about with that egypt thing lmao

they aren't called slopes because asia is a mountainous region jesus.
its the eyes.
they are narrow??
get it?
apologizing for humor
Clarkson admitted to nothing in the article, did you not read it before you posted it?
Even if he did it was still funny, Clarkson's whole humour is that he's insensitive to everyone else, and it works.

Apart from if you genuinely didn't know (like myself) then how in the fuck else are you supposed to know it can be used in such an offensive way? Until all this I considered a slope (and well, still do) to be one of the most annoying things to walk up.

So basically they caved in to get everyone to shut up.

consider yourself educated then
it comes from the phrase slopehead as a racial slur for the appearance of people from south east asia.

It's our responsibility to keep a dictionary of antiquated racial slurs on us and refer to it every time we open our mouths to avoid being racist, didn't you know?

I hope you don't have to mop up a nasty spill in aisle eleven anytime soon, you fucking racist!

if you don't know what the word means maybe you shouldn't be using it
and I find it very hard to believe a really old conservative jingoist never knew the word slope was a slur.
I'm sure he's watched Full Metal Jacket or something
most people automatically jumped to Clarkson's defense
because this is bullshit
not for any other reason
because this is bullshit

why?
It was admitted he was referring to the thai man as a slope, not the bridge.

No, it was admitted that he was referring to both, not one or the other.

And he is white! And male! Don´t forget that he is a white male!

Don't worry NoDachi, I'm gonna be teaching my children to always use the term rise over run in everyday conversation so that you don't get your jimmies rustled ever again.

No but it looks like Agent Dachi Dumbass is on patrol again.
Jeez... why are some people so obsessed with being politically correct.
It was a wordjoke, no big deal.
Here in the Netherlands we call our Asian friend "Chinky", our black friend "Blackass" and my friends brother who has downsyndrome frequently refers to himself as "Downie". And they all laugh about it, all three are seriously good friends of mine.
As long as it's said jokingly, then why the hell is it a problem? The guys here call eachother all sorts of potentially really offensive stuff and we all take it lightheartedly?
I have a friend who's going bald age 23, and he's really vain and it's the worst thing that has happened to him as of yet, but we tease him with it all the time and he laughs. I wear glasses, and my exgirlfriend tried to get pregnant from me without my knowing or consent aged 18 and after I found out a really dramatic breakup ensued, and I get ripped on for both.
But, if we're in a fight, or if we have an argument we wouldn't bring any of the above up to the person in question, because then it's obviously ment to deeply offend or insult someone.
why?

Wasn't the man walking towards him actually James May? I remember someone pointing that out.
I'm writing an angry letter to my school's physics department as we speak!
