[QUOTE]Moscow (AFP) - Thousands of Russian troops marched through Red Square on Friday as Moscow put on a powerful show of patriotism and military might following its annexation of Crimea.
As Ukraine's crisis rumbled on with pro-Moscow rebels pushing ahead with independence votes, President Vladimir Putin praised Russian patriotism and loyalty to the state.
"This is a holiday when all-conquering patriotic force triumphs, when we all feel especially strongly what it means to be true to the Motherland and how important it is to be able to stand up for its interests," Putin told massed troops to shouts of "Hurrah! Hurrah!"
Russia's annual parade celebrating victory over the Nazis held special resonance this year amid the crisis in Ukraine, which has seen Russia annex Crimea and fighting in pro-Moscow areas in the east where separatists are threatening to break away.
Similar Victory Day celebrations were planned for later Friday in Sevastopol, with Russian media reporting that Putin could make a triumphant appearance at the Crimean port.
As dozens of helicopters and planes soared in the bright blue sky over Moscow, thousands of troops marched alongside tanks, mobile missile systems and armoured vehicles to the sound of a brass band.

Gives me a boner seeing all that russian steel.
Is this Russia's version of Manifest Destiny?
Hmm, big burly hunks in green standing shoulder-to-shoulder and praising Daddy Putin while big long missiles follow them. My square is red too.
I expected this years Parade to be pretty big, they got boring over the last years.
I have to watch the whole thing somewhere. Some of the songs are really catchy

Interesting how the Russians have adopted some elements of western vehicles and uniform design.

But then I flop because we are a fraction of the size we used to be
What a retarded news article.
Even though this exact same parade happens every year, with the same exact speech Putin usually gives, they still try to spin it around as if it's some special, out-of-the-blue muscle flexing designed to scare the West following the Crimean situation when it has absolutely nothing to do with that.
This article has literally no purpose other than saying: "Look, look at those oppressive Russians muster for war! Be afraid."
This would be like people thinking the US is preparing to invade another middle eastern country just because a military parade is performed

Every large power in the world has downsized their Naval Forces. We've found large flotillas of men-filled, rust-prone boats to be largely expensive to maintain. Gone are the days of vast Naval bombardments and flotillas. Present are the days of predator drone strikes, super carriers, and elite strike forces.

I'd put money on that.
I still want a VSS Vintorez though.

aren't super carriers kinda... going useless? at least from an utilitarian point of view, since there are missiles capable sinking a carrier in one hit, like this one the chinese made.
they're still useful for power projection though.

Not really, they're just phasing out all the 1960's and 70's stuff for modern equipment now their economy is finally out of the post-soviet shitter.
The thing I like most about these russian parades is the smug douchebag grin on all the participants' faces.
I bet they're told to do that as a part of their parade uniform.

Basically this. To get the whole picture you need to look at least for 20 articles from all types of mass media.
Even for as biased, as Russian and Ukrainian ones, which are doing nothing, except blaming each other in all sorts of crimes.

It's mostly New York Times, Russia Today, and (imo) Vice that push out the crap. You can find good articles elsewhere, especially in independent media:

So are cobblestone roads still a big thing in Russia, or is that like my town's single cobblestone street where it's a case of "b-b-but muh historeh"?
Why do those actions, like parading in crimea or attacking liberalism in russian media, come as a surprise to everyone?
Look at the ruling political parties in russia, and their ideologies.

Isn't everything pointless because you could just drop a nuclear bomb onto anything and obliterate it?
Super carriers are still very relevant since they're a mobile airstrip that you can strategically deploy anywhere there's coast/water.

There is not much evidence to suggest that they weren't elected properly

I don't think there's any European city without some streets still paved with cobblestones
