• Ex-Employee: The Worst Thing About Google Is Google+
Spencer Tipping left Google about a month ago. We know this because he's written a blog post saying as much, and listing all of the pros and cons about working for Google. Juicy! Kind of. If you're into programming, mostly. But the money shot's the number one negative of Google culture: Google+. To be fair, this is just one man's assessment. Clearly, someone at Google—a lot of someones, actually—are behind Google+. And for Google to arrive at its manifest destiny of "putting an entity of a person in a search box," it needs the personal data that social platforms like Facebook, Foursquare, or Google+ offer up. But this isn't the first time that we've heard a Google employee suggesting that Google+ isn't worth the time and resources that are sunk into it. Tipping's number 1 and 2 Cons for corporate culture were "Google+" and "Ubiquitous political emphasis on Google+ that sometimes compromised other engineering efforts." Here's his extended explanation:
I think Google+ is an effort that does not deserve the engineering minds at Google. This is mostly a personal bias. I see Google as solving legitimately difficult technological problems, not doing stupid things like cloning Facebook. Google, in my opinion, lost sight of what was important when they went down this rabbit hole.
The rest of Tipping's post is a deep look into what working at Google is really like. Totally open, and employees are able to code for basically any project, it takes Don't Be Evil very seriously, but it's a little creaky around the bureaucratic edges. Check out his full post for the details.
http://gizmodo.com/5914870/ex+employee-the-worst-thing-about-google-is-google%252B?utm_campaign=socialflow_gizmodo_facebook&utm_source=gizmodo_facebook&utm_medium=socialflow
Gotta agree. Google isn't good at "getting with times" when all it does is copy other well established services. But still, was he tripping when he decided to leave google?
He's right, Google's about innovation and always have been.
Silly Gawker typical they would run an article like this. If they'd been quicker to the punch with Google+ it would've been so much better, but the fact me and so many others are deeply integrated into Facebook it didn't seem worth the effort.
Google+ is much much better than facebook.A shame nobody uses it
Google+ is much much better than facebook.A shame nobody uses it
I'll be honest - there's little difference. Mostly only the userbase and a slightly less ad-bombed wall/timeline/whatever you call it.
I'll be honest - there's little difference. Mostly only the userbase and a slightly less ad-bombed wall/timeline/whatever you call it.
And the fact the grouping function works on Google+
Google+ is much much better than facebook.A shame nobody uses it
It has neat features but honestly I like Facebook. I mean g+ is neato, don't get me wrong I think if more of my friends were on it I'd switch but that's not the case. Nobody uses google+, the only time I really used it was to play angry birds in class because I had time to do shit all and all the game websites are blocked and g+ wasn't. I don't think we'll see google+ take over facebook right now, maybe not even ever who knows.
and the second is the ownership of youtube
and the second is the ownership of youtube
What's the big deal with google owning YouTube? They've made a few mistakes here and there but not enough for everyone to fuck off somewhere else.
and the second is the ownership of youtube
We wouldn't have YT anymore if not for google.
The reason Google started going insane with video ads is because bandwidth costs them out the ass.
and the second is the ownership of youtube
The largest problem with Youtube is the userbase. Go ahead, pick a popular video and read the comments. Though there's a couple of fuckups here & there made by Google, but they still doesn't beat the deluge of morons.
. Go ahead, pick a popular video
Bam RWJ
Gotta agree. Google isn't good at "getting with times" when all it does is copy other well established services. But still, was he tripping when he decided to leave google?
To be fair, that's what they did with gmail and it worked
We wouldn't have YT anymore if not for google.
Maybe not, but another video site would have arisen if Google had not bought Youtube.
Last thing I want is for Google to take up more data about my personal life like they haven't already. They already read my emails, record my Youtube videos and views, as well as place tracking cookies on my browser to record my internet activities. To personally place my life record on Google+ just puts the icing on the cake for this corporation; if I haven't already with Facebook.
To be fair, that's what they did with gmail and it worked
Because at that time(and now) gmail was actually good. Amazing spam filter, no obnoxious ads and so on. G+ has nothing new or interesting to take over facebook.
Google is a company with a ridiculously high percentage of very educated people. At some point they figured out that it was beneficial to just let the intelligent employees run with ideas. This is how pretty much every google service was born. It is also why so many google services die. One team inside google has an interesting idea, google lets them try it, and if it works then it remains in service. Google+ is little different, it just gets more attention because they are the only people willing to legitimately go head to head with facebook. The circles feature on google+ is both socially and technically a brilliant idea that resolves one of the major issues with facebook. IMO it is likely the superior service.

[editline]1st June 2012[/editline] In fact my grandmother is on Facebook. [editline]1st June 2012[/editline] She calls me to talk about the pictures she sees there.

We all know that the reason anybody who uses Facebook hasn't switched to Google+ is that only like 4% of your Facebook friends have a Google+ account, and you'll be lucky if even half of them check it as regularly as they do their Facebook one. Google should have known better than hoping everyone would suddenly switch just because it's Google.

I think they stole something else, I can't remember but there was a point where facebook took note of g+ and started carrying those things into facebook. Like special interest groups and stuff, they act like circles in some respect.
Google+ and Facebook ain't got shit on MyYearbook.
Only thing MyYearbook has is a ton of 16~ year old girls willing to send you naked pictures of themselves, and guys who use pictures of their penis as their avatar. Seriously, that place is a festering ground for CP.
uh ok whatever you say bro
Google+ is much much better than facebook.A shame nobody uses it
It does nothing Facebook can't, significantly. Google was just late to the party, hence why G+ failed. It's not bad. It's just too late.
G+ probably would have worked had they got it out sooner.
We wouldn't have YT anymore if not for google.
But that's a good thing, that way something would eventually replace it, instead of everyone becoming apathetic about it's problems and simply not giving a fuck because they settled in.
Honestly, I think Google+ is a million times better than Facebook ever was, but I agree with the idea that Google should be solving the difficult technical problems. They have the resources to do what nobody else can, so although they can make a kick-ass social network, be, I don't think that's the right direction for them. I'm not a fan of 'social networking sites' in general (and don't use your warped "Facepunch is a social network, durr-hurr" logic on me, you know precisely what I mean and if you make me clarify you'll earn my eternal ire) because I talk to the people who I want to talk to IRL and would rather ignore the people who I don't/wouldn't talk to IRL. Google+ gives me the capability to keep some level of privacy and distinction between different groups of friends/acquaintances that Facebook doesn't offer. So maybe that affects my view somewhat. I also wouldn't say that it's dead or that it isn't competitive with Facebook. Everyone I care to talk to has switched to G+.
