Hey guys, I have recently started work as a VFX artist and now that I am finally earning cash I have decided to start saving for a big PC upgrade and probably my last for a good few years (planning on moving in with the gf etc next year so need money for more important crap). As you probably know I have made numerous indecisive threads in the past, so to save the bitching I decided to make myself my Dream/Reality PC on Scan (im from the UK) Here it is: (before you say I will be kicking the i7s ass in AFX and Maya) CPU: Intel Core i7 930 (Bloomfield) http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Intel-Core-i7-930-D0-SLBKP-Bloomfield-45nm-28-GHz-QPI-48GT-s-8MB-Cache-20x-Ratio-130W-Retail Mobo: Asus P6X58D-E http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Asus-P6X58D-E-Intel-X58-S1366-PCI-E-20-(x16)-DDR3-2000-(OC)-SATA-6Gb-s-SATA-RAID-ATX RAM: Corsair Dominator 6GB (1600) http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/6GB-(3x2GB)-Corsair-Dominator-DDR3-PC3-12800-(1600)-CAS-8-8-8-24-DHX-XMP-New-connector-165V PSU: Coolermaster 850W SilentProM http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/850W-Coolermaster-SilentProM-Modular-SLi-85plus-Eff-Bronze-ATX-12V-V-23-EPS-12V-V292 GFX: 2X EVGA GTX460 SC http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/1GB-EVGA-GTX-460-SC-3800MHz-GDDR5-GPU-763MHz-ShaderClock-1526MHz-336-Cores-2x-DL-DVI-I-MiniHDMI SFX: Creative Soundblaster XF-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Creative-Soundblaster-X-Fi-Titanium-Fatal1ty-Professional-New-Version Unsure on CPU cooling but I have always set my sites on the Xigmatek Red Scorpion, mainly because I bought it before and it wouldn't fit my PC (was heart broken). I will be re using my old HDDs and Case etc. I have an Antec Twelve Hundred Also I want to go SLI because I will probably be getting multi displays in the future (3XMonitors)
I'd recommend going for a 470 and save up the cash for another 470 when you plan on getting a third monitor.
I'd recommend going for a 470 and save up the cash for another 470 when you plan on getting a third monitor.
Hmm, I thought they were supposed to be hot and greedy? If im going to spend £220 ish on a card surely i'd be better off with the 5850? If anything I'd rather get the single GTX 460 for now.
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/191826 excellent PSU and enough for 2 460s the EVGA EE 460s suck, http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/1GB-MSI-GTX-460-Cyclone-3600MHz-GDDR5-GPU-725MHz-Shader-Clock-1350MHz-336-Cores-2x-DVI-I-mHDMI are still the best 460s you can get
The XFX PSUs do look good, but that 750W version will only take one GTX 460, id need 4x 6+2 connectors.
each 460 needs two 6pin PCI-Es even the 650w has 4 6pins, two of which are 6+2

What's your budget?
I want to say wait for Sandy Bridge
This build is at the top end of my budget o_o To the point where I've been considering going i5 instead to save myself like £200 which will give me enough for a second monitor. Which is best Intel i5 or AMD Phenom 955BE? Also can somebody point me to a P55 mobo that will run 2 cards in SLI or Crossfire at 16X bandwidth....
i5, and you don't need full 16x bandwidth. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188055&cm_re=evga_p55_sli-_-13-188-055-_-Product

as long as it's 8x/8x and not 16x/4x you're fine for pretty much any multiple card setup possibly not dual 5970s but who would do that on 1156 anyway

I had ideas of the 2 cards being crushed to 50% How about this motherboard then? With an i5 of course. great motherboard
it's bandwidth, it's easiest to think of it as a limitation rather than an actual performance affecting specification
Good point, limitation isnt realy an issue with 2 GTX 460s I suppose? As much as I'd love to go for an i7 build id be saving myself almost £300 by going i5... What sort of power would I need to support 2 460s? I know 750W would be safe but how many amps would I need to run them well and safe?
