• NHS patients told "bring your own fans"

A hospital in Essex without enough fans has told visitors they can buy them or bring them in for patients. The only ward at Basildon Hospital which is air conditioned is accident and emergency. But as temperatures reached 24C (75F) in the town on Monday, the hospital said it was letting people bring in their own fans because there were not enough for each patient. The Patients Association said hospitals should give fans to patients as needed. One recent visitor to the hospital, who asked not to be named, told how her elderly mother's ward was "stiflingly hot" with bays of four beds having to share just one fan. She said staff had told her she could either buy a fan for her mother or bring in one from home. A spokeswoman for Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospital, said there had been no "call out" for people to bring in their own fans. However, she said, those concerned about the heat were welcome to bring in fans and arrangements would be made for them to be safety tested by hospital staff. The spokeswoman said stockpiling enough fans to meet the needs of all patients "would not be an effective use of NHS resources to have a fan for every patient". Katherine Murphy, chief executive of the Patients Association, said: "Our helpline is inundated with calls from patients, carers and the public about poor experiences in hospitals - all of which often highlight broader challenges for the NHS and patient care. "A patient's safety, comfort and outcomes could clearly be negatively affected by the temperature of a ward being too hot or too cold - in particular elderly and vulnerable individuals - and this is an issue that trusts do need to consider, especially during extreme weather conditions. "Trusts should provide items like fans when they are needed, otherwise this responsibility falls on relatives. "However many patients may not have family able to visit or who are in a position to buy a fan or meet other needs like this." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-essex-19319818
Budget cuts are a bitch ain't they?
Budget cuts are a bitch ain't they?
That closing ceremony was something though right?
75 degrees isn't hot. Cry more Essex, bunch of pussies.
bays of four beds having to share just one fan.
Oh lord, the BRUTALITY. [sp]Sarcasm[/sp]
24C (75F)

"stiflingly hot"
Bitch you're getting no-quibble medical staff and treatment at no extra cost, suck it up.
1 fan for 4 beds really isn't that bad, I mean at school you'd be lucky to have one fan for the whole class.
It's 30c in here and my brother lives in the same room as me, and is stealing the entire fan.
I thought 75 was hot until I went to Cyprus where it was about 102.

24C (75F)

"stiflingly hot"

This is Britain where the buildings are designed to keep as much heat in as possible because of our fuel prices
I know they're not used to heat like that, but I can't help but chuckle at them flipping shit over 75 degree heat, when we managed just fine where I live in 100 degrees with no power, in the middle of July :v:
I can't win. It's boiling in here but if I open a window, I get instantly raped by a swarm of insects and shit. UK problems. Most, if not all, houses have double glazing and other insulation solutions because it's usually cold and miserable here. As soon as it's hot, bam.
A hospital my grandfather was in (Bronxville NY) had A/C but sometimes it wasn't on. They allowed small fans don't see how this is a big deal.
I can handle 24 degrees but if it reaches 26 then my room is hell, especially to sleep in.
I thought 75 was hot until I went to Cyprus where it was about 102.
Most days here, it's been 105F+. Think that's hot? I went to Tulsa, OK last week, the average temp for most days was 110F, and one day hit 115F.

If it's hot for one day, the house will be hot for weeks even when its cold outside.

This is a fucking hospital, where there's sick people, a lot of them might not be fit enough to handle temperatures like that with their current health.
I picked up a fan for a fiver the other day. People need to stop complaining.
My girlfriend was in hospital the other week for an operation, and I was out in the waiting room area for like 6 hours. Something about those buildings just make it so ridiculously sticky and uncomfortable. It wasn't necessarily hot just massively uncomfortable.
1 fan for 4 beds really isn't that bad, I mean at school you'd be lucky to have one fan for the whole class.
Yeah, but this is a hospital. I don't think it's god-awfully terrible but you can't really compare a class of healthy kids to a hospital ward.
This is Britain where the buildings are designed to keep as much heat in as possible because of our fuel prices
if they keep the heat in the also keep the cold in (or the heat out).
Stifingly hot?
You know, people get used to climates?
This. If it's hot for one day, the house will be hot for weeks even when its cold outside.
It's the same in the Netherlands, except it was 33C out yesterday.
BYOF
This is no big deal. Most hospitals have fans only to cool down the building when the sun is out. The heat at the moment (while fantastic) just isn't the norm, so why can't people just bring their own fans? Just a good bit of advice. Otherwise it's the same as possibly buying millions of pounds worth of snowploughs and it doesn't snow, only obviously in a different climate. If the weather comes up I'm sure a long term strategy will come along.
75F? That is considered hot in Essex? [editline]20th August 2012[/editline] I mean I can understand if it's a cramped waiting room with a ton of body heat, but 75F is hardly very hot at all on its own.
Have any of You even been in a hospital? Temperature control is extremely important. People with different illnesses have different temperature needs. Hell I was in the hospital a few days ago getting my right hip replaced and the medicine I was on made me burn up despite the room temperature being quite cool. The fact that this is even an issue is a joke and reflects the quality of the hospital. The OR needs to maintain a cool sterilized environment, and the ICU, burn units, and other high-care wards need to have controlled environments to keep infection at a minimum. I had to pay 5 grand to get my hip replaced but at least my hospital wasn't stuck in the 1920's.
Ok grandpa, no need to get your buttfrustration levels so high.
Sorry I hold my hospital visits to modern standards. [editline]20th August 2012[/editline] And I'm 20. Being born with bilateral hip necrosis and displaysia is a bitch ain't it? [editline]20th August 2012[/editline] I mean, there are awful hospitals in the states too, but what's the excuse for a government funded hospital to have this simple problem? They should've spent the money they used waving the NHS's dick around in the Olympics opening ceremony and upgraded their hospitals simple AC issues.
