Due to a recent misfortune tonight, I can not buy my lovely cymbals.
I now need:
1 12" inch drum head
1 13" inch drum head
1 16" drum head
1 Snare tone control
Now, I have an Evans head on my snare, so I was gonna go for evans because I did a bit of research. But I still like getting the opinion of facepunch.
What brand should I get?
Evans seems good, but I know facepunchers have more experience than me.
I really need something that sounds good, stays in tune, isn't really too expensive, and holds up to a real beating. I hit them on the hard side
Where's a good place to buy?
Is drumfactorydirect.com and Guitar center good places to buy from?
Thank you music section for the help!
As of 9\17\2010, I have bought all the parts I need. Please see the post 13 for the parts list. Thank you very much for your help
The new toms I have have a Evans Hydraulic for resonant side heads, and a Remo CS-Controlled Sound for the batter side. They sound nice. Drum heads are something you're going to have to experiment with for the sound you want.
Are they durable? Do they stand up to a beating?

Also, do you suggest clear or coated? Is there a difference in sound?
It seems I can get all the Remo tom heads I need in a pack and I can choose clear or coated.

Oh, and how does this tone control look?

If you're looking to get rid of overtones I have been recommended moongel and dampening rings. I have not used moongel but dampening rings do get rid of the overtones, the issue is that if you have a kit like mine which has 5 toms, they typically come in packs, and typically have 12, 13, 14, and 16 inch rings or 10, 12, 14, and 16.
I have never used coated on my toms, so I can't really say. The issue with getting in packs is that if you have odd toms, like my 20 inch floor tom, finding 20 inch heads in a pack is a pain. Not to mention some people like to mix and match for a different sound.
Hey what do you know? Remo sells a dampening kit for 12, 13, 14 and 16 inch drums, which are all the ones I have.
I still need the other tone control though sine it's supposed to be part of the snare. Does it looks good?
Also rings: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Remo-RemOs-Tone-Control-Rings-Pack---12---13---14---16--134108-i1168148.gc
After what I've heard, I would recommend moongel over dampening rings. Dampening rings get rid of most if not all of the overtones, and although some people find that great, moongel tends to be cheaper and can be cut and modified to how much you need. And you aren't restricted to the size of the drums.

Guitar Center doesn't have moongel for some reason.
Instead of buying moongel, buy those sticky gel things that are meant to go on windows. It's the same stuff.

You'll get more for less.
I'll go with the gel then.
But how do you even install that gel stuff?
MoonGel: You just set it on the head. Try to place it closer to the rim so you don't dampen the whole drum; adjust as you feel necessary.
For the bottoms of the drums, I would recommend either just plain old Ambassador resonant heads for the toms, or Genera G1 resonant heads. Make sure they are resonant heads, as batter heads are generally thicker; especially for snare drums.
If you need a snare-resonant head, the Evans Hazy 300 head is pretty nice. Super thin, which makes the snare speak really openly.
For tom batter heads, you can go with standard Ambassador heads, or Genera G1/G2 (single/double ply). I personally use coated heads a lot; coated heads will generally sound warmer and smoother, with nice tonal qualities. Un-coated heads generally have more attack and are a bit more open with more overtones.
Good coated head sound example:

snipped, see below post
Well let me rephrase that.
What I mean is...
Can I buy my new tom heads, and play them, then buy the bottom heads and the gel and still be able to have a good sounding kit?

Anyone here?

Also: Do I absolutely need an internal tone control on my snare? I'm using a site with free shipping now and they don't have any in stock.
Will dampening gel work in place of the controller?
