Susan Collins, a Republican who's been in the Senate since 1997, said she is not going to vote for Donald Trump as president, finding him unsuitable for office "based on his disregard for the precept of treating others with respect, an idea that should transcend politics."
"I will not be voting for Donald Trump for president," she wrote in a Washington Post op-ed published Monday night. "This is not a decision I make lightly, for I am a lifelong Republican. But Donald Trump does not reflect historical Republican values nor the inclusive approach to governing that is critical to healing the divisions in our country."
She joins Sen. Mark Kirk, an Illinois Republican senator in a tough re-election race, in not voting for Trump. Kirk withdrew his endorsement of the GOP nominee in June.
In the op-ed, the moderate Mainer known for working across the aisle listed many instances when the Republican nominee made moves that were criticized by the media and his own party.
"With the passage of time, I have become increasingly dismayed by his constant stream of cruel comments and his inability to admit error or apologize," she said.
Ought to keep track of the number of GOP politicians openly opposing Trump, it'd be great to see a graph saying "60% of Republicans oppose Republican presidential nominee" by November :v:
I've been very happy with Collins as our senator. She's always been very rational, even if I don't agree with her on a lot of things, and tbh congress could use more people like her on both sides of the isle.
This is just a really weird situation to me. The Republican voters chose Trump. The Republican leadership, old school Republicans, sort of stood by and watched it happen. I think they probably couldn't believe it actually would happen. But it did.
Now they are in a position of withdrawing their support from him, due to their dismay that he's their candidate, when he's running for President against their most reviled opponent, a WOMAN no less! A Clinton!
On top of all that, they know they will have to reconcile rejecting the people's candidate when this is all over. All those Republican voters who support Trump will not soon forget how party leaders wimped out.
If I wrote this as a movie script last year no one would have thought it was realistic.
