Chicago Pet Rescue takes in an obese, 85 pound Beagle

gotta fuckin love local news.
Kale chips may be the only food this 85-pound beagle eats for a while.
The extremely obese beagle was rescued earlier this week by local animal rescue One Tail at a Time after he was surrendered to Chicago Animal Care and Control. The rescue said the poor animal “became urgent as soon as he came in” because he could hardly walk.
“He had to be wheeled out in a wagon,” the shelter said in a Facebook post.
Owen said rescuers only know that Kale Chips’ owner was elderly, but they believe that something may have prevented his owner from being able to walk him.
“My assumption is that the owner couldn’t walk him for quite some time, fed him too much and without exercise over time he got to be that size,” she said.
Owen estimated that a typical beagle weighs in at 20 to 30 pounds, but noted that Kale Chips could be mixed with another breed that may make him larger.
The shelter asked for help fostering Kale Chips until blood tests are completed and he is put on a new health plan. At that point, he will be eligible for adoption.
“He’s awesome. He loves people, he doesn’t seem like depressed or anything like that,” Owen said. “He’s just a happy guy.”
can't seem to embed the image, but dog's in source :)
Am I alone in thinking that animals just get cuter the fatter they get? I want to wiggle that thing's belly and call him chubs.
Poor guy's going to die young.
I don't like when people train their dogs to eat all their food at specific times. I used to do that with my dog, but now I just leave a bowl out with food in it. He eats when he's hungry and I fill it back up when it's running low. He's a healthy weight and he never overeats. Most dogs won't overeat as much as this one did if they're allowed to eat at their own pace.

I consider allowing an animal to get like that to be a form of cruelty.

I'm not disagreeing that it's way over the line of what should be allowed for health reasons, but I do still think that dog is cute as heck.

We did this with our cat, but he used to be a stray, and I don't think he ever really got the concept that food wasn't in limited supply anymore after we adopted him. Mr. Minderbinder got fat as fuck. We had to get him a weeble wobble food bowl. It's a weighted ball that bounces upright when you knock it over, and it has a tiny hole in the side. He has to bat it with his paw, and every time he does a few kibbles fall out. The fact that he actually has to work for his food now curbed his overeating pretty well. Laziness wins out once again.
Our dog is only allowed to eat in the morning, because he's just too tiny and stupid to figure out potty training all the way. He'll do his biz outside if we let him out, and he'll even sit by the door when he has to go out, but he won't come get us or make any noise if we don't happen to the be in that room. He'll just shit on the floor and bounce off all pleased about it. Scheduled eating gives us "danger zone" times where we know we'll have to keep a close eye on him. After months of trying to train him, I think this is about the best we can hope for.
It you removed the head from the picture i'd think it was a cow at first.

Alaskan Malamutes do, as do a lot of stronger breeds.

I'm conflicted between laughing and feeling bad at the same time.

It's true, my malamute got fat as fuck, getting down to a healthy weight was a life-long struggle for her.
I had a beagle mix that was pretty fat and he would constantly be looking for food. The cat would catch mice and he would bully the cat away and eat them whole :pwn:

Yep. "Primitive" breeds tend to be pretty crazy about food as in their original environment they often had to hunt for it themselves, they weren't fed. Their behavior can also affect the other dogs around them. I have a half-malamute (half-akita) that only ate enough to live and didn't touch the rest, but when we got a malamute who even as a small puppy tried to eat from her cup (he got less hysterical about food with time, thank god) she started eating all her food because other dogs were hysterical about it and she started to get protective too.

I don't know man, some dogs just won't stop eating if there is food available. Ironically my brothers beagle basset hound mix would get into the cupboard and eat several pounds of a 40lb bag of dog food. He'd basically be so uncomfortable and have to stay outside until it all passed through, and even then there are stories of dogs literally eating themselves to death.

Huskies are close relatives of the malamute, but are well known for self regulating food intake. I don't think the "primitive" title is the reason. Frankly I'm surprised malamutes even have that problem.
Aww poor dog, beagles are so cute.
When I have the money, I am going to move somewhere colder(and where I can have a sizeable gun collection without too much trouble) and live with a whole pack of dogs, preferably malamutes or huskies or something wolfy like that. Grew up with dogs and I just fucking love those awesome creatures. Belgian shepherds are really cool, but most breeders breed on that "I am an elegant and reserved dog" kind of mentality and not those robust wolf instincts. My dog was not like that though, she came from a bitch that was artificially inseminated with the seed of a groenendahl from the 80's where you bred these kind of dogs as hardy, obedient dogs well suited for military and police, and of course, as shepherds, with a nice touch of wolf, in mentality.

It's sort of interesting that certain breeds have this problem, though. I've had a lab, two golden retrievers, and two other adopted strays of who-knows-what breed, and only one of them would ever overeat. Weird.

its okay, there's a place in hell for each of us

I have a beagle and this upsets me immensely.

Well if you adopted him, at least your dog would match your avatar, hell you could go into PS and put in a big dog next to him.
“He had to be wheeled out in a wagon,” the shelter said in a Facebook post.
But seriously, what the fuck?
I had a golden retriever that got really fat for seemingly no reason. We only fed her diet food and only the amount suggested to us by the vet, but she just stayed fat. The veterinarians were convinced we were lying. It was weird as hell.
holy fuck that dog is adorable id take like 10 but i dont have room
